The
clash
between
two
rival
groups
in the
Topo
Chico
prison
in
Monterrey,
left 52
dead and
12
injured,
five of
them in
serious
conditions,
said the
governor
of Nuevo
Leon,
Jaime
Rodriguez
Calderon.
At a
press
conference,
the
governor
explained
that the
dead and
injured
inmates
are from
blocks
C2 and
C3 and
he also
denied
that
there
are
women or
children
among
the
victims.
Rodriguez
Calderon
ruled
out the
use of
firearms
during
the
fight
and that
inmates
have
escaped
or have
tried to
do it.
He
explained
that a
confrontation
between
two
rival
groups
started
yesterday
at 23:30
hrs and
lasted
30 to 40
minutes.
During
the
fight
several
inmates
set fire
to
warehouses
without
affecting
the
dormitories.

Prison
authorities
mentioned
that the
origin
of the
fight
was the
murder
of Jorge
Ivan
Hernandez
Cantu,
aka
"Credo
Commander"
who was
one of
the
regional
leaders
of the
Gulf
Cartel
and was
arrested
in 2012.
He and
Juan
Pedro
Saldivar,
aka
"Z-27",
were
fighting
for the
control
of the
prison.
Around
1:30 pm
the
situation
was
brought
under
control
with the
intervention
of the
prison
authorities.
Elements
of the
Army,
Navy and
Federal
Police
maintain
surveillance
in the
prison.
The
governor
said
that out
of
respect
to the
families
of the
prisoners,
the
names of
the
deceased
will be
released
until
the
authorities
have
certainty
of their
identity.
The
process
of
identification
of
victims
continues
by the
Department
of
Expert
Services
of the
Attorney.

Rodriguez
Calderon
said
that his
office
will
provide
personalized
attention
to
families
of the
victims
and that
he will
request
the
presence
of the
State's
Commission
of Human
Rights
during
the
investigation.
The
governor
said
that
these
events
"are
extremely
unfortunate
and
painful"
at a
time in
which
"Nuevo
Leon is
living a
tragedy
resulting
from the
difficult
conditions
in
prisons".
The
governor
mentioned
that the
Topo
Chico
prison
"does
not have
the
conditions
to
respond
quickly."
