DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - It was a hot Friday night at Comerica Park. The only thing hotter than the weather was the Tigers offense and bullpen. And with the start of a crucial weekend series with division-leading Chicago White Sox, it couldn't have come at a better time.

The Tigers began strong when Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Later on in the fourth, with the game tied at three, Johnny Peralta hit his eleventh home run of the year to give the Tigers the 4-3 lead.

After the White Sox tied the game in sixth, Delmon Young hit a three RBI double in the seventh to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Young has enjoyed a strong August that seems to keep getting better. "I just try to go out there and play my best," Young said, "Whether I get on base or drive in runs, you need to make big plays."

The bullpen did their job in the final two innings. Joaquin Benoit struck out three straight in the eighth and Jose Valverde closed the door in the ninth to get Detroit within two games of first place in the division.

"It's going to be a tough month for us but we got to keep playing our best and hope for the best," said manager Jim Leyland. The Tigers continue their series with the White Sox when Max Scherzer faces off against Francisco Liriano Saturday eveing at Comerica Park.
