  Detroit Red Wings tour new home: Little Caesars Arena to open for 2017-2018 NHL season in The District Detroit

DETROIT - Detroit Red Wings players and coaches visited with crew working to build Little Caesars Arena and got a first-hand view of the construction progress on their future home today. Little Caesars Arena will open in less than a year and be ready for action at the start of the next NHL season. Little Caesars Arena is a multi-faceted, state-of-the art venue for sports, concerts and other events and is the centerpiece of the 50-block The District Detroit development.

Michigan Made, Detroit Built:
Little Caesars Arena has more than 800 workers on site six days a week
More than 100 apprentices have worked on the site so far, learning and earning
Detroiters have worked more than 250,000 hours on the site already
More than $320 million in contracts have been awarded to Detroit-based businesses, representing nearly 60 percent of total contracts, and well over $500 million, or 90 percent of contracts, have been awarded to Michigan businesses

Arena Construction Factoids:
The arena’s structural steel frame is nearly complete with 7,528 pieces erected out of 7,566 total
Arena precast concrete is nearly complete with 632 pieces erected out of 760 total
Concrete for the Piazza, which is being built on metal decking above the practice ice, is complete
In total, nearly 80,000 cubic yards of concrete have been poured on the arena and adjacent structures
On-site practice ice adjacent to the arena, nearly 40 feet underground, will also be used for amateur hockey and is nearly also nearly complete
The Via, a covered atrium that will provide a year-round pedestrian walkway on the east and south sides of the arena, is taking shape between the arena and Woodward Avenue and Henry Street buildings
Installation of the framework for the jewel skin that wraps around the Via has begun, visible on the east side of the arena; this dramatic exterior component is a complex system of radial metal panels that will also provide a unique feature wall on the interior

Fan Amenities/Innovations:
A visionary bowl design with enhanced sightlines that create incredibly intimate an intimidating home ice and great concert experiences
Innovative seating options, including "gondola" seating suspended over the event level
Dynamic LED sports lighting and special effects, enhanced video, and state-of-the-art sound capabilities for a more immersive experience
A “jewel skin” on the outside of the arena bowl that can display video and graphics
The Piazza open space featuring a massive video wall
Retail, Residential, and Office Buildings:
Foundation concrete and structural steel are complete on a two new retail and office buildings near the arena on Woodward Avenue and on Henry Street.
A portion of these buildings will house Red Wings administration
These buildings will also bring new shops and restaurants to The District Detroit’s Woodward Square neighborhood
The clear-covered area between these buildings and the arena bowl create The Via, a unique, year-round shopping and dining space

The District Detroit:
A world-class sports and entertainment district led by the Ilitch organization; will transform 50 blocks around six theaters and three professional sports venues into new restaurants, offices, shops, parks and places to live and connect Downtown and Midtown into one liveable, walkable area
Home to the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and with the opening of Little Caesars Arena in 2017, the Detroit Red Wings
The District Detroit will ultimately account for an impact of more than $2 billion by 2020 and create 12,500 construction and construction-related jobs and 1,100 permanent jobs
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings hockey club, an Original Six member of the National Hockey League and 11-time Stanley Cup Champion, were purchased by Michael and Marian Ilitch in 1982.
Under Ilitch ownership, the team has won four Stanley Cup championships, six Presidents’ Trophies as the NHL’s regular season champion, 16 division titles and have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs in 25 consecutive seasons (1990-91), marking the longest active streak in all of North American major professional sports.
The Red Wings are celebrating the “Farewell Season at The Joe” in conjunction with the team’s final season at Joe Louis Arena. Planned activities include celebrations honoring the Stanley Cup Championships and the biggest games held at The Joe, alumni celebrations featuring Red Wings greats
