90th PGA CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD AT OAKLAND HILLS DAILY NOTES
FROM TUESDAY AUGUST 5
With
reigning U.S. Open Champion Tiger Woods not here this week,
Angel Cabrera, the 2007 U.S. Open Champion, will round out
the traditional pairing featuring the winners of the years
first three major championships.
Cabrera will be paired for the first two rounds with Masters
Champion Trevor Immelman and British Open Champion Padraig
Harrington. They start play Thursday at 1:15 p.m. on the
first tee, and begin play Friday at 8:05 a.m. on No. 10.
Only three players have ever won the British Open and PGA
Championship in the same year. Walter Hagen was the first to
do it, in 1924, and it wasnt until 70 years later that Nick
Price became the second player to capture both major
championships in the same year.
Tiger Woods (2000 and 2006) is the only player to twice win
the British Open and PGA Championship in the same year.
Two-time and reigning British Open Champion Padraig
Harrington will try to add his name to that elite list when
he starts play on Thursday afternoon.
Former college teammates Rocco Mediate and Eric Manning have
made the most of their reunion at the 90th PGA Championship.
The twosome, who competed together on Florida Southern
Colleges 1983 and 1984 college golf teams, have been
reunited this week.
We had a lot of fun back in the day at school, said Mediate,
who has five career PGA Tour victories and came up just
short in a memorable 18-hole playoff in June at the U.S.
Open. I was watching the scores at the PGA [Professional]
National Championship and saw that he was up there and it
was really cool. Its great to see him.
Manning, PGA head professional at Cortland (N.Y.) Country
Club, qualified for the 90th PGA Championship in June at
Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga. He joins a group of
20 PGA Professionals this week who have earned berths in the
PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club.
This is their Championship, said Mediate, and it is an honor
to be here as a Tour professional.
There are 10 PGA Champions competing this week at Oakland
Hills:
Bob Tway (1986), John Daly (1991), Paul Azinger (1993),
Steve Elkington (1995), Mark Brooks (1996), Davis Love III
(1997), Vijay Singh (1998 and 2004), David Toms (2001), Rich
Beem (2002) and Phil Mickelson (2005)
Oakland Hills is only the fourth course to host the PGA
Championship at least three times. Southern Hills has hosted
the most PGA Championships with four; Oakland Hills is now
tied at three with Oakmont Country Club and Firestone
Country Club.
There are 26 players who have won a combined 35 major
championships in the field this week.
Jack Nicklaus (1975) is the last player to win the Masters
and the PGA Championship in the same year.
