DETROIT
(Tell Us
Det) -
From the
plant
floor of
Detroit
Chassis,
Lansing
Mayor
Virg
Bernero
officially
announced
plans to
seek the
Democratic
nomination
for
Governor
of
Michigan.
Bernero
began a
three
city
campaign
tour
Monday
morning
in
Detroit
surrounded
by
family
and UAW
workers
before
heading
off to
Grand
Rapids
and
Lansing.
“Citizens
across
the
state
want a
different
kind of
leadership
at the
state
Capitol”
Bernero
said.
“Our
state
politicians
spend
far too
much of
our time
on
partisan
politics,
playing
the
blame
game
instead
of
focusing
on long
term
solutions.”
As
Governor
Bernero
says he
will
immediately
do
things
that aim
directly
at
getting
citizens
back on
their
feet.
“First,
we will
demand
that the
legislature
get off
the dime
and pass
a
two-year
moratorium
on
mortgage
foreclosures.
Second
we will
use
every
bit of
leverage
available
to us to
at he
state
and
federal
levels
to force
credit
card
companies
to stop
charging
outrageous
interest
rates.”
And
third
“We will
lead the
restructuring
of
Michigan’s
tax code
to make
our
state a
magnet
for new
investment
and job
creation.”
Bernero
was
elected
last
month to
a second
four-year
term as
mayor of
Lansing
and
served
from
2001-06
as a
state
representative
and
state
senator.
Known
nationally
as a
strong
advocate
of
autoworkers,
Bernero
has
appeared
on CNN
and the
Fox News
Network
to speak
on
behalf
of US
manufacturing.
The
Lansing
mayor
chose
the
Detroit
Chassis
plant
because
of its
success
in
making a
business
case to
Ford
Motor to
allow it
to build
RV and
truck
chassis’s
here in
Michigan.
Bernero
praised
the
plant
for
having
the best
worker
attendance
record
of any
manufacturing
facility
in the
country.
State
Rep.
Alma
Wheeler
Smith is
the only
other
Democrat
officially
in the
running
for
Governor;
- Lt.
Gov.
John
Cherry
withdrew
from the
race
last
month.
