Occupy Detroit gets one week extension  from City Council to clear Grand Circus Park

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Members of the Occupy Detroit movement packed up food, fire wood and portable electric generators to take to temporary storage warehouse in southwest Detroit ahead of police action during an evection deadline at 11:59 PM tonight.

A raid on the camp by the Detroit Police on Monday night seems imminent, but what's most important is for authorities to get fear and paranoia out of the mix and help protesters make good decisions based on clear thought and not knee-jerk reactions.

OD members sat through a lengthy council session Monday morning before taking part in the public comment portion of the agenda, but Council members re-stated the permit for the group has not been approved. The vacate time has not changed, though a vote is set for Tuesday, well after the evection deadline has passed. Some city council members seem to be sympathetic to the group.

The movement is not sure when or where the new camp will be set up but there have been several private property owners in the area who are willing to allow the camp to relocate to their lots. The City of Detroit Recreation Department, late last month issued a 30-day permit retroactive to Oct. 14, which was day one of the Grand Circus Park occupation.

City officials say the evection warnings and cold, wet weather have dropped the tent population from over 150 to about 20.

In a tense escalation of the Occupy Portland protest, police in riot gear Sunday surrounded demonstrators in a downtown park area after hundreds of people defied the mayor's order to leave the park by midnight. Occupy Oakland campers are looking over their shoulders these days, as the feeling is it's not if police will forcibly remove them, it's when.

For the second time in 24 hours, police distributed eviction notices to protesters at Frank Ogawa Plaza and Snow Park on Saturday morning. A homicide on the encampment's doorstep, camp crackdowns in other Occupy establishments across the country and ramped up rhetoric have created a tense community, although it did not stop a spirited march Saturday evening.
