Occupy Detroit to hold May Day events

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Occupy Detroit, along with other local activist groups, will hold May Day (May 1.) activities beginning with a 3 mile march organized by a coalition of organizations (Occupy Detroit, One Michigan, Autoworker Caravan, Peace Action of Michigan, SE Michigan Jobs with Justice, Detroit Area Peace and Justice Network, Moratorium Now to Stop Foreclosures and Evictions, and Michigan Emergency Committee against War and Injustice.)

Starting time will be noon at Clark Park, in Southwest Detroit, and proceed to Maybury School, the train depot, the Federal Building, and Rosa Parks Transit Center to gather more supporters. The march will end with a rally at Grand Circus Park downtown, where the group will set up camp and occupy for the night. This will be the first time Occupy Detroit has occupied a public space over night since last fall.

There are also big events planned for the next day, from noon to 1pm. Activist Charity Hicks (of Black Food Security Network) and Rev. Edward Pinkney (of the NAACP) will speak, followed by a march to the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center to oppose the “Consent Agreement.” The rest of the day will include a variety of festivities, including music, food, art, and trainings.

An OD spokesman states they are occupying for many reasons, but two messages stand out : They demand economic equality and demand money out of politics!
