Saturday, the
new
Downtown
Detroit
Foodland
Supermarket
opened its
doors to
the
downtown community
The
full-service
market
is
located
at 1565
East
Lafayette
at the
corner
of
Orleans
just
east of
I-375.
The
market
is owned
and
operated
by
grocery
veteran
Keith
Tansil
who has
more
than
thirty-years
in the
grocery
business.
Mr.
Tansil
has
brought
Downtown
Foodland
Supermarket
to a
community
that has
been
without
a grocer
for
several
years.
The
140,000
square-foot
space
was
leased
from
First
Commercial
Realty
in the
Shops at
Lafayette
Park.
Mr.
Tansil
has
managed
grocery
stores
in
Detroit�s
Grandmont-Rosedale
area
since
1978 --
first at
Kroger's
for
fifteen
years
followed
by the
Metro-Foodland.
He is
confident
that the
Greater
Downtown
area is
a good
place to
invest
to serve
the
community.
"There
was a
need for
a
grocery
store in
this
area,
the
neighborhood
deserves
it,� Mr.
Tansil
said.
"I've
been
doing
this for
30 years
and this
is a
good
spot to
open a
supermarket
with
quality
food and
services
for an
under
served
community."
The
Downtown
Foodland
employs
40
people
and the
hours of
operation
are 8
a.m. to
9 p.m.
Monday
through
Saturday
and 9
a.m. to
6 p.m.
on
Sunday.
Detroit
Mayor
Ken
Cockrel
paid a
visit to
the new
Foodland
supermarket
to
congratulate
store
owner
Keith Tansil
and
staff.
