An
11-year-old
boy
drowned
Saturday
afternoon
after he
and his
8-year-old
brother
left
home
without
permission
to go
swimming
pool at
Little
Rock
Baptist
Church.
Detroit
Police
spokesperson
Sgt.
Alan
Quinn
said,
"the
11-year-old
got into
the deep
end and
drowned."
The the
call
went out
to
police
at about
2:40
p.m. and
rushed
to find
the
youth
had been
pulled
from the
water
and
adults
were
trying
to
revive
him next
to the
pool, he
said.
He is
identified
by his
father
Dennis
Fyfe as
David
Fyfe,
his
youngest
child.
“Maybe
he did
what he
wanted
to do.
But it
should
have
been
secure,"
says
Dennis
Fyfe.
"The
building
was
unsecured.
There’s
nobody
watching.
They
weren’t
supposed
to be
swimming
at all.
There’s
no
lifeguard.
I don’t
know.”
Family
and
friends
who
received
the call
rushed
over to
the
center.
They
were
kept out
for some
time and
left to
grieve
on the
front
steps. A
sign was
posted,
temporarily
closed.
Fyfe
says his
son was
pulled
from the
water,
wrapped
in a
blanket
and
placed
on the
side of
the
pool.
The
Little
Rock
Family
Life,
Education
and
Recreation
Center
is
located
at 8904
Woodward
near
Holbrook.
The
building
is still
the
legal
property
of the
City of
Detroit
Recreation
Department.
The
church
operates
the
center
under a
lease
with the
city,
according
to the
agenda.
