Detroit boy drowns in Little Rock rec center swimming pool

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - An 11-year-old boy drowned Saturday afternoon after he and his 8-year-old brother left home without permission to go swimming pool at Little Rock Baptist Church. Detroit Police spokesperson Sgt. Alan Quinn said, "the 11-year-old got into the deep end and drowned." The the call went out to police at about 2:40 p.m. and rushed to find the youth had been pulled from the water and adults were trying to revive him next to the pool, he said.

He is identified by his father Dennis Fyfe as David Fyfe, his youngest child. “Maybe he did what he wanted to do. But it should have been secure," says Dennis Fyfe. "The building was unsecured. There’s nobody watching. They weren’t supposed to be swimming at all. There’s no lifeguard. I don’t know.”

Family and friends who received the call rushed over to the center. They were kept out for some time and left to grieve on the front steps. A sign was posted, temporarily closed. Fyfe says his son was pulled from the water, wrapped in a blanket and placed on the side of the pool.

The Little Rock Family Life, Education and Recreation Center is located at 8904 Woodward near Holbrook. The building is still the legal property of the City of Detroit Recreation Department.  The church operates the center under a lease with the city, according to the agenda.
