Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park reach agreement on new gateway along Kercheval

DETROIT, MI - The cities of Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park have entered into a joint agreement to create a new gateway along Kercheval Road linking both communities, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Grosse Pointe Park Mayor Pro Tem Gregory Theokas announced today.

As part of the agreement, Grosse Pointe Park will reopen access to Kercheval at Alter Road and construct a new permanent public Market that is accessible and visually appealing for entire Alter- Kercheval block. The existing Farmer’s Market will be removed after only two months of operation. The project was never completed.

The City of Detroit will install a landscaped traffic roundabout at Kercheval and Alter that will complement the existing roundabout on Kercheval in Grosse Pointe Park. These changes will support the Park’s commitment to creating a vibrant, quaint, village atmosphere for shoppers and Detroit’s ongoing revitalization.

Under the agreement, the city of Detroit also has committed to removing several abandoned buildings along Alter between Jefferson and Mack Avenue and working collaboratively with the city of Grosse Pointe Park on issues such as traffic engineering, permitting and planning for the area.

“We are very excited about our new partnership, which will improve the area and benefit residents in both Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “It became clear during this process that we all share the common goal of creating a safe and attractive environment that links our communities in a neighborly way. This agreement will help accomplish that.”

“I am truly impressed with the effort demonstrated by Mayor Duggan, Butch Hollowell & their team, along with our own administrative officers to facilitate a Joint Master Plan for the entire East side that includes the length of Alter Road from Jefferson to Mack Avenue,” said Mayor Pro Tem Gregory Theokas. “This collaborative effort will result in our creating a seamless transition between Detroit and Grosse Pointe Park.”
