Cobo Center awarded five scholarships to high school and college students

DETROIT– In a ceremony held today inside Cobo Center’s fully equipped, state-of-the-art television and broadcast studio, five students and their perspective schools were granted $6,000 in scholarships through the Cobo 30/60 Video Scholarship. In addition to the scholarships, the winning entries debuted on Cobo Center’s outdoor video board located on the corner of Washington Blvd. and Congress St. in Detroit.

High school senior, Christopher Adams of L’Anse Creuse High School in Harrison Charter Township received $1,000 for his college education. Adams is planning to major in advertising or graphic design at Wayne State University, College for Creative Studies or Macomb Community College.

“I was ecstatic when I heard that my video had won, as this was my first time producing film,” said Christopher Adams, Cobo 30/60 Scholarship Grand Prize Winner. “I was very much inspired by the renovations done to Cobo Center and the powerful energy of the City of Detroit.”

Four runner-up videos also debuted on Cobo’s outdoor video board, with the students each receiving $500 to support their education. The runner-ups were Hassan Bazzi of Dearborn High School, Cheyenne DeWolf of Lakeview High School, Tarik Dobbs of Dearborn High School and Chloe Dunklin of Lawrence Technological University. Students’ schools also received a matching donation from Cobo Center.

“We saw an extraordinary amount of talent displayed through this scholarship challenge,” said Thom Connors, regional vice president and general manager SMG/Cobo Center. “We are thrilled to display that talent on the video board for everyone to see and enjoy.”

The final phase of Cobo Center’s $279 million renovation includes the installation of two external video boards. The Congress video board totals 3,000 sq./ft. and is at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Congress St. in the center of Downtown Detroit. The marquee board on Jefferson Ave. and Washington Blvd. is 4,800 sq./ft. and will debut this summer.
