AT&T,
Secretary

on
'Distracted
Driving'
in
Michigan

DETROIT
- Citing
research
that
shows
seven in
10
people
engage
in
smartphone
activities
while
driving,
AT&T
will
team up
Thursday
with
Michigan’s
Secretary
of State
Ruth
Johnson
to
address
a
dangerous
practice
–
smartphone-distracted
driving
To
reinforce
the
message
and
these
findings,
AT&T is
bringing
a
virtual
reality
simulator
to the
Detroit
Secretary
of State
Super!Center,
allowing
customers
to
experience
firsthand
how
dangerous
it can
be when
you take
your
eyes off
the road
and
direct
them
onto
your
phone.
Michigan
Secretary
of State
Ruth
Johnson,
a
supporter
of the
“It Can
Wait”
campaign,
is proud
to have
her
office
help
host the
event.
“Distracted
driving
has
ended in
tragedy
more
times
than
anyone
cares to
count,”
Johnson
said.
“It’s my
job to
license
Michigan’s
drivers
and
inform
people
of all
ages on
the
dangers
associated
with
distracted
driving.
I am
proud to
offer
our
Detroit
SUPER!Center
as a
host for
drivers
to use
the ‘It
Can
Wait’
simulator.”
According
to a
2015
study
from the
AAA
Foundation
for
Traffic
Safety,
driver
distraction
contributed
to more
than
half of
crashes
involving
teen
drivers,
Johnson
said.
“We
teamed
up with
Secretary
Johnson
to
communicate
a
critical
message
to
Michigan
drivers
–
distracted
driving
can be
deadly,”
said Jim
Murray
president
of AT&T
Michigan.
“One
text,
one
email,
even one
glance
is all
it takes
to end a
life.
This
simulator
demonstrates
the real
consequences
of
looking
at your
phone
while
driving,
and we
believe
it will
have a
lasting,
positive
effect
on
everyone
that
‘drives’
it.”
Murray
said
Thursday’s
stop is
one of
three
planned
throughout
Michigan
this
week.
Other
events
will be
held at
an AT&T
store in
Portage
on
Tuesday,
June 14,
and the
State
Capitol
in
Lansing
on
Wednesday,
June 15.
It Can
Wait is
a
national
movement
urging
drivers
to visit
www.ItCanWait.com,
where
they can
pledge
to keep
their
eyes on
the
road,
not on
their
phone,
and
share
their
pledge
with
others
via
Twitter
(#ItCanWait)
and
Facebook.
What
started
as a
campaign
focused
on not
texting
and
driving
has now
expanded
its
focus to
the
broader
dangers
of
smartphone
use
behind
the
wheel.
Since
its
launch
in 2010,
the
campaign
has:
• Helped
drive
awareness
of the
dangers
of
texting
while
driving
to about
90
percent
for all
audiences
surveyed.
•
Inspired
more
than 6.5
million
pledges
not to
text and
drive.
• Worked
with
departments
of
transportation
in
Texas,
Kentucky
and
other
states
on
research
that
suggests
a
correlation
between
It Can
Wait
campaign
activities
and a
reduction
in
crashes.
