HOLLYWOOD ICON AND OSCAR AWARD WINNER FILMS NEW MOVIE IN
METRO DETROIT
By HB Meeks/Tell Us Detroit
"Gran
Torino" portrays Clint Eastwood as disgruntled Korean
War vet Walt Kowalski trying to reform his neighbor, a young
Hmong teenager, who tried to steal his prized possession: a
1972 Gran Torino.
Eastwood is only the most resent movie maker to take
advantage of subsidies signed into law this spring by
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, including rebates of up
to 42 cents on the dollar of production costs.
The news of Clint Eastwood’s visit to Detroit's eastside was
kept low-key. Dirty Harry fans, movie buffs and the curious
had to strain for a glimpse of the Hollywood icon and Oscar
Award winner from the next block in sweltering 90 degree
weather, however a Tell Us Detroit photographer was able to
get exclusive shots from the set. Once the local
photographer was discovered on the movie scene, he was
politely asked to leave by production company security.

Besides Detroit, the 150 plus cast and crew members will
spend the next eight weeks filming in Grosse Pointe Park,
Warren, and Royal Oak. |
Clint Eastwood is not only directing the movie but also
stars as the main character. Gran Torino is the first film
that Eastwood has acted in since Million Dollar Baby, which
captured four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best
Director in 2004.

News about the film came out
when it quietly appeared on Warner Brothers’ list of
December releases. No word yet on whether the shooting will
be completed by then. Eastwood, who is always on time and
under budget has his work cut out for him. |
Eastwood’s last directorial efforts were the 2006 companion
pieces Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. His
next release, set for November 7, is "Changeling", a
child abduction drama starring Angelina Jolie.
