Momentum builds for Wayne
County Executive bid
DETROIT - Seven of the state’s largest law
enforcement unions have announced their support
of Warren C. Evans for Wayne County Executive,
noting his strong background in public safety,
his history of collaborating and his plan to
make Wayne County safer by properly funding the
sheriff’s and prosecutor’s offices.
The groups backing Evans, a former Detroit
Police Chief, former Wayne County Sheriff and
former assistant Wayne County prosecutor, are:

Detroit Police Officers Association
Detroit Emergency Medical Service Workers
Wayne County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association
Wayne County Sheriff’s command officers union,
AFSCME Local 3317

“Warren Evans knows what it takes to make public
safety a priority,” said Brian Erle, president
of the Wayne County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association
and legislative director of the Deputy Sheriff’s
Association of Michigan.
Others who have endorsed Evans include the
Detroit Free Press, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan,
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Dearborn
Mayor John O’Reilly, SEIU Healthcare Michigan,
Operating Engineers Local 324, Government
Administrators Association, UFCW Local 876,
UNITE HERE, Local 24, Amalgamated Transit Union,
Local 26, Michigan Regional Council of
Carpenters and Millwrights, The Black Slate,
Sen. Bert Johnson, Sen. Tupac Hunter, clergy,
and Livonia City Council President Maureen
Miller Brosnan. A May 16th poll showed Evans
leading his opponents by double digits.
A lifelong public servant, Evans has worked and
managed through some of the county’s toughest
times. As sheriff, he managed a $150-million
budget and 1,300 employees. As Detroit Police
Chief, he helped to reduce violent crime by 27
percent. He also worked to protect city bus
drivers and keep patrons safe. Evans’ efforts
include halting foreclosures as sheriff; going
after slumlords as an assistant prosecutor, and
saving the juvenile detention facility from
federal oversight.
