The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan Hosts Fundraiser at The Rattlesnake Club in Detroit

Event will raise money for NKFM Detroit Branch’s vital programs and services

DETROIT – On Monday August 9, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM)-Detroit Branch will host its fourth annual Cool Blue Monday fundraiser at The Rattlesnake Club in Detroit. All proceeds from the event will support the vital programs and services of the NKFM-Detroit Branch Office.

The NKFM-Detroit Branch Office offers a variety of programs to serve the more than 111,000 Detroit residents living with chronic kidney disease and the thousands more who are at risk. The Healthy Hair Starts with a Healthy Body™ program trains African American hairstylists to speak with their clients about nutrition, exercise and disease prevention. A male version of the program, Dodge the Punch: Live Right™ teaches African American barbers to speak with their clients about healthy lifestyles. Together both programs have encouraged 58 percent of individuals to make a healthy lifestyle change such as eating healthier, increasing physical activity, or quitting smoking.

The Detroit office also offers the Healthy Families Start with You program to serve parents and children in Head Start schools. The program focuses on teaching parents to make healthy lifestyle choices for themselves and their families. A component of the program, Regie’s Rainbow Adventure, teaches preschool children about nutrition and physical activity through a series of interactive story books.

Another Detroit program, Healthy Kids and Kidneys, teaches sixth-grade children in Detroit Public Schools the importance of exercise and nutrition. Students learn how to prevent and manage diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease. The program reaches 400 children each year and serves kids who are at the poverty level. Outcomes show that children increase their knowledge regarding physical activity, nutrition and chronic disease prevention.

The Take the Pledge program focuses on members of Black Greek Lettered Organizations to help increase the number of individuals who sign-up on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry while increasing awareness about diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease.

Supporting these programs, Cool Blue Monday will offer a fabulous evening of fine dining, cocktails and live jazz. There will also be a silent auction featuring upscale gift items. Located at 300 River Place Drive, the event commences at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m.

A limited number of tax-deductable tickets can still be purchased for $100 each. For tickets or event information, please call the NKFM-Detroit Branch at (313) 259-1574 or visit www.nkfm.org.

The NKFM offers more programs and services to more people than any other National Kidney Foundation affiliate in the country. The organization was recognized for its success in sound fiscal management by receiving a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for the fourth consecutive year. The mission of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan is to prevent kidney disease and improve the quality of life for those living with it.
