KEM  Live: 3rd Annual Mack &Third fundraiser benefits the homeless

DETROIT, MI (Tell Us Det) - Thousands of people came together Sunday for a free concert at Cass Park, to give a hand up to those who have fallen on hard times and to raise awareness about homelessness. The concert put on by Detroit soul singer KEM, who was once homeless himself. The GRAMMY-nominated Motown recording artist hosted “KEM Live @ Mack & Third” - a day-long free concert, fundraiser & food drive to benefit the homeless, which took place for the Third year.

The 2012 event will feature “A Message & A Meal” from KEM specifically for the homeless, several vendors with food & merchandise, free health screenings and five hours of live entertainment that will culminate in a performance by Grammy-nominated artist KEM with special musical guest, Frankie Beverly and MAZE.

“Mack & Third is about giving back,” said KEM. “I’ve been fortunate to overcome many obstacles including being addicted to drugs and homeless. If it weren’t for organizations like the Detroit Rescue Mission and NSO (Neighborhood Service Organization), I wouldn’t be where I am today. I want to encourage others in their current situations by offering something tangible like a meal, along with the hope that things can get better. By sharing my music with a free concert, I also hope to inspire others to give back.”

A major highlight of the event was “Mack & Third” Health Row, where free Health Screenings were offered to the general public throughout the day. A number of local organizations have volunteered to provide free services including: Blood Pressure & Glucose Screening, HIV/AIDS testing, STD testing and Syphilis screening as well as numerous other health-related resources.

Returning as a partner in these efforts for the second year is the Department of Health Wellness Promotion - Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Recovery (BSAPTR).

Other organizations offering free health screenings and/or information to the homeless and general public are: Detroit Asthma Coalition; Detroit Health Department; Detroit Medical Center; First Responders for Fitness/Nutritionally Yours; Karmanos Cancer Institute; Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program; and Detroit Community Health Connection.

Women’s Resource Center; The Mariners Inn; Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO); Transformation Detroit; The Salvation Army; Sobriety House; and YWCA-Interim House.
