DETROIT’S
YOUNGEST
LITERARY
STARS TO
SHINE AT
INSIDEOUT’S
15TH
ANNUAL
GALA
DETROIT
–
InsideOut
Literary
Arts
Project
announced
today
that its
brightest
youth
literary
stars
will be
honored
on
Thursday,
May 21,
2009 at
the 15th
Annual
Spring
Gala and
Publication
Parties.
This
year's
milestone
celebration
will
once
again
recognize
and
celebrate
youth
literary
merit.
"Celebrating
our
students’
achievements
is
always
the high
point of
the
year,”
said
Terry
Blackhawk,
PhD,
president
and
founder
of
InsideOut
Literary
Arts
Project.
“We have
spent
the last
fourteen
years
forging
partnerships
and
bringing
the
pleasure
and
power of
poetry
and
literary
self-expression
to
Detroit
youth.
From our
youngest
elementary
school
students
to our
high
school
students
competing
in slams
across
the
country,
our
youth
bear
testament
to the
city’s
excellence.”
Each
gala
will
include
readings
by
students
who have
participated
in the
2008/2009
program.
The
galas
serve as
an
opportunity
to
release
30
creative
writing
anthologies
from
Detroit
Public
Schools
students
as well
as an
anthology
from
Highland
Park’s
Henry
Ford
Academy
and one
from
South
Lake
High
School.
The High
School
Gala
will
feature
participants
from
special
InsideOut
programs
including:
VOICES,
The
Literary
Magazine
Publication
Center
and
Citywide
Poets.
It will
also
feature
the
awarding
of the
9th
Lotus
Press
High
School
Poetry
Prize
from
Detroit’s
Poet
Laureate
Naomi
Long
Madgett.
“With
all of
the
negative
things
you hear
about
the city
of
Detroit,
it is
always
refreshing
to
attend
InsideOut
events,”
said
Denise
Page
Hood,
president
of the
InsideOut
Board of
Directors.
“Many of
our
Citywide
Poets
have
performed
at Brave
New
Voices,
featured
recently
on HBO,
and our
writers-in-residence
have
published
and read
throughout
the
nation.
InsideOut
plays an
instrumental
role in
enhancing
the
city’s
image on
the
national
stage.”
The 15th
Annual
InsideOut
Literary
Arts
Gala and
Publications
Parties
will be
held on
May 21.

Gala
will be
held at
the
Detroit
Public
Schools
Children’s
Museum
from
12:45
until
3:00
p.m. and
the High
School
Gala
will be
held at
Wayne
State
University’s
McGregor
Conference
Center
from
4:30
until
6:30

InsideOut
Literary
Arts
Project
was
founded
in 1995
to place
professional
poets
and
fiction
writers
in
Detroit
schools
to
encourage
young
people’s
imaginative
writing
and
promote
self-confidence
and
awareness
through
publicizing
and
celebrating
their
work.
InsideOut
conducts
year-long
programs
primarily
through
Detroit
Public
Schools,
annually
serving
over
5,400
students,
grades 1
through
12, in
thirty-two
schools.
