DETROIT’S YOUNGEST LITERARY STARS TO SHINE AT INSIDEOUT’S 15TH ANNUAL GALA

DETROIT – InsideOut Literary Arts Project announced today that its brightest youth literary stars will be honored on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the 15th Annual Spring Gala and Publication Parties. This year's milestone celebration will once again recognize and celebrate youth literary merit.

"Celebrating our students’ achievements is always the high point of the year,” said Terry Blackhawk, PhD, president and founder of InsideOut Literary Arts Project. “We have spent the last fourteen years forging partnerships and bringing the pleasure and power of poetry and literary self-expression to Detroit youth. From our youngest elementary school students to our high school students competing in slams across the country, our youth bear testament to the city’s excellence.”

Each gala will include readings by students who have participated in the 2008/2009 program. The galas serve as an opportunity to release 30 creative writing anthologies from Detroit Public Schools students as well as an anthology from Highland Park’s Henry Ford Academy and one from South Lake High School. The High School Gala will feature participants from special InsideOut programs including: VOICES, The Literary Magazine Publication Center and Citywide Poets. It will also feature the awarding of the 9th Lotus Press High School Poetry Prize from Detroit’s Poet Laureate Naomi Long Madgett.

“With all of the negative things you hear about the city of Detroit, it is always refreshing to attend InsideOut events,” said Denise Page Hood, president of the InsideOut Board of Directors. “Many of our Citywide Poets have performed at Brave New Voices, featured recently on HBO, and our writers-in-residence have published and read throughout the nation. InsideOut plays an instrumental role in enhancing the city’s image on the national stage.”

The 15th Annual InsideOut Literary Arts Gala and Publications Parties will be held on May 21. The K-8 Gala will be held at the Detroit Public Schools Children’s Museum from 12:45 until 3:00 p.m. and the High School Gala will be held at Wayne State University’s McGregor Conference Center from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. For more information, call (313) 965-5332.

InsideOut Literary Arts Project was founded in 1995 to place professional poets and fiction writers in Detroit schools to encourage young people’s imaginative writing and promote self-confidence and awareness through publicizing and celebrating their work. InsideOut conducts year-long programs primarily through Detroit Public Schools, annually serving over 5,400 students, grades 1 through 12, in thirty-two schools.
