United Way for Southeastern Michigan offering grants up to $300K for eligible greater Detroit nonprofits

DETROIT, MI - United Way for Southeastern Michigan has announced Social Innovation Fund (SIF) grant opportunities from $100,000 to $300,000 for eligible nonprofits in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. Request For Qualifications (RFQs) are now being accepted. The grants are made available following United Way’s 2016 four-year $6,000,000 grant from the Social Innovation Fund, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Nonprofits with a focus on or interest in serving parents and caregivers of children ages 5 and younger are eligible to apply to become a United Way for Southeastern Michigan SIF sub-grantee.

As a SIF sub-grantee, Greater Detroit nonprofits will help further the impact of the nonprofit’s Bib to Backpack initiative throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. United Way will competitively select four to six sub-recipients to implement the initiative, which supports skill-building for parents and caregivers of young children; empowers adults to expand their social and resource networks and increase their self-sufficiency and use of resources; and prepares children for school readiness and lifelong success.

The SIF is a powerful approach to transforming lives and communities, and positions the federal government to be a catalyst for impact – mobilizing private resources to find and grow community solutions with evidence of results. As part of the SIF, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, as well its sub-grantees, must match the federal funds dollar-for-dollar, which allows for even greater community impact.

Since 2011, the Social Innovation Fund and United Way for Southeastern Michigan have awarded $7,491,783 to eleven local organizations. The funds were used to evaluate and expand innovative approaches to childhood development, and ensure children ages 5 and younger are developmentally on-track and ready to learn. The SIF and CNCS’ Share Our Strength also awarded $375,000 to United Way in 2014 to accelerate the growth of its No Kid Hungry campaign in Detroit.

Greater Detroit nonprofits interested in submitting RFQs to become a United Way SIF sub-grantee or to obtain more information should visit www.LiveUnitedSEM.org/SIFRFQ. For more information about United Way’s Bib to Backpack initiative, visit www.LiveUnitedSEM.org/bibtobackpack.
