DETROIT - The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) hosted more than 300 community leaders, business owners, entrepreneurs and residents during its annual Community Investment Breakfast on Thursday, June 16. The event was presented by MotorCity Casino Hotel and held in the SoundBoard located at 2901 Grand River Ave., Detroit. This year’s keynote speaker was Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans. FOX 2 Detroit’s Huel Perkins served as master of ceremonies.

In recognition of this year’s breakfast theme – Southwest Resurgence – the event celebrated the growing economic investment that is taking place in Southwest Detroit while also acknowledging SDBA programs and services to promote business and community development. Local individuals, businesses and organizations were recognized during an awards ceremony for their achievements and positive contributions to the community.

“This year’s honorees have diligently worked to make our neighborhood a better place to live, work and play,” said SDBA President Kathy Wendler. “As valued community partners, their dedication is inspiring and we’re truly proud to share their individual stories and thank them for their efforts.”

The list of honorees include: Jose and Sandra Lopez, Taqueria Mi Pueblo Mexican Restaurant – The Springwells Award for Small Business Investment; John James, Jr. and Lorron James, James Group International – The Bagley Award for Generational Investment; Motor City Match – West Vernor Award for Community Leadership Investment; Maria Salinas, Congress of Communities of Southwest Detroit Neighborhoods – The Kathy Wendler Award ; Bank of America Neighborhood Builders Program – The Clark Street Award for Civic Investment; and SEMCOG and MDOT – The Spirit of Southwest Detroit Award.

In just under two years in office, Executive Evans and his team generated Wayne County’s first General Fund surplus in eight years by implementing a fiscal Recovery Plan that has eliminated the County’s accumulated and structural deficits.

The Evans Administration reduced Wayne County unfunded healthcare liabilities by nearly one billion dollars. They also negotiated new contracts with Wayne County’s labor unions. The National Organization of Black County Officials recently recognized Executive Evans as its 2016 County Executive of the Year for his work to turn around the County’s finances.

Perkins has worked at FOX 2 News for 24 years. He has won two Emmy awards for reporting, as well as four nominations for Best Anchor. In addition to anchoring the weekday evening news, he also hosts the popular talk show “Let it Rip!” on Thursday nights.
