Hartford "Musical Connection" presents Sensational One-Armed Trumpeter

DETROIT - On Friday, October 10, at 6 pm the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, “MUSIC CONNECTION” will present the Sensational One-Armed Trumpeter, Carlot Dorve who will perform with the Michigan State University, College of Music’s Cosmopolitan Brass Quintet.

The Free concert entitled “BRASS BASH & SONG” will showcase Dorve, a MSU senior from Haiti and a scholarship student of Richard Illman, Trumpet Chair, MSU College of Music. Dorvan, who was right-handed, lost his right arm to an infection in Haiti when he was just 5 years old which meant he had to work even harder to learn to play the trumpet with the left hand.

“I was about nine years old and I would watch the kids go to music class,” said Dorvé. “When I heard them play, I felt it, I loved it but they wouldn’t allow me to play. They said I couldn’t but I was persistent.” He started to play the trumpet when he was 12 years old.

While at Mott Community College in Flint, word of this remarkable one-armed trumpet player spread. His reputation and talent preceded him at Michigan State University’s Music Department. “I got an anonymous phone call from a woman who just said ‘I have a trumpet player you need to hear,’” said MSU trumpet professor Richard Illman who has since performed duets with Dorvé .

Carlot Dorve performs classical, jazz and church music in Haiti and the U. S. and has appeared with Wynton Marcellus and the New York Jazz Orchestra.

Also performing at the MUSIC CONNECTION concert will be:
