MAYOR KEN COCKREL, JR., DETROIT BRANCH NAACP, AND THE BOOKER T. WASHINGTON ASSOCIATION KICK OFF SHOP DETROIT 2008

Mayor Kenneth V. Cockrel Jr. in partnership with the Detroit Branch NAACP, and the Booker T. Washington Association are encouraging Detroiters to Shop Detroit. This is an annual campaign designed to support Detroit businesses and promote shopping in the city.

Its critical that we support Detroit based businesses not only during the holiday season, but year round said Mayor Cockrel. I encourage Detroiters and Metro Detroiters to shop at some of the most unique stores in our region.

The Detroit Branch NAACP is proud to provide our continuous support of Shop Detroit, said Donnell White, Deputy Director, Detroit Branch NAACP. Shop Detroit shines a light on the many businesses that help keep Detroit going. We encourage support of all these businesses and urge all to remember to spread their holiday cheer in the City.

Participating retailers will be listed in the Shop Detroit guide, which will be available in various locations throughout the city and on the Citys Web site in early December.

One of the perks of this program is that participating retailers offer a $5 discount from any purchase of $25 or more. Customers must have the Shop Detroit dollar with them at the time of purchase. Shop Detroit dollars are available at your local Neighborhood City Hall. For location information, please call 313-224-3450.

Additionally, Mayor Cockrel is offering another incentive for those that do their holiday shopping in Detroit. There will be free metered parking for the first two hours (city wide) until December 31, 2008 in the following areas: downtown Detroit; New Center area (bounded by W. Baltimore, Woodward, Third and W. Bethune); the Avenue of Fashion on Livernois; and Grand River and Greenfield. Several City of Detroit structures and lots are also providing free or discounted parking (list included below).

I want to make it as convenient as possible for everyone to Shop Detroit said Mayor Cockrel. The City of Detroit offers a tremendous amount of shopping options for the holiday season and throughout the entire year. It is my hope that Detroiters and visitors alike will take advantage of two hours of free parking and the Shop Detroit campaign.

The Shop Detroit program is sponsored by the City of Detroit, along with the Detroit Branch NAACP, and The Booker T. Washington Business Association.

Participating retailers will be identifiable by the Shop Detroit Dollars placard found in their window. There are approximately 120 Detroit businesses that are participating, but the list grows daily. To obtain Shop Detroit Dollars and a copy of the growing list of boutiques, specialty shop, restaurants and retailers in the city please visit www.detroitmi.gov  to download a copy.
