The Robeson break-in was among two that occurred Tuesday night, hours after DPS announced that school-related crime was down 37% in the first two weeks of this school year, as compared with the same time frame last year.

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The Detroit Public Schools held a press conference Wednesday morning provide details of a foiled break-in at a vacant Paul Robeson Academy school building on the city's west side.

DPS Police Chief Roderick Grimes said five district police officers interrupted the break-in but one was injured in an encounter with a burglar during the process of arresting two men found inside the building.

The officer injured was John Greene, a six-year DPS police veteran when and other officers responded to a break-in late Tuesday night at the vacant former Paul Robeson Academy building that had been destroyed by a fire which occurred earlier this year. Two suspects found in the rafters were arrested without incident, said DPS Police Chief Rod Grimes.

The third suspect didn't give up easily. He beat Greene in the chest, arms and head with a metal object. Greene was protected by body armor over his chest, and was later taken to and treated at Henry Ford Hospital for injuries to his arms and head. He was then released, Grimes said. A police dog assisted in the arrest of the 25-year-old suspect. All three suspects are in Detroit Police Department custody awaiting charges, he said.

“I can’t say enough about what our officers do. ... They go into these buildings every night,” Grimes said. “We will use all our assets and resources to take into custody those that dare – that dare – steal from our young people,” Grimes said.

Roy Roberts, the DPS emergency manager, commended the school police after Tuesday's incident. “Everyone in the call of duty did the right thing,” he said. Roberts said the Robeson building will be demolished starting in December.
