“Today’s event, which we know was inspired by the parents of both schools, is a perfect example of that cooperation,” said DPS Emergency Manager Roy Roberts. “It’s a testament to their support of this merger and their eagerness for their children to be housed in a 21st century learning environment that meets the needs of today’s students.” (Photo by HB Meeks/Tell Us Detroit)

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - More than 1,000 Detroit Public School students, parents, staff and community members of Parker Elementary Middle School and Barton Elementary school gathered at Mackenzie Pre K to 8 to celebrate its grand opening. In attendance was Emergency Manager, Roy Rogers who briefly spoke about the status of the improvements in all of the DPS schools.

“I had the opportunity to meet the community leadership in this neighborhood just a few weekends ago and was very impressed with the level of involvement and cooperation here,” said Emergency Manager Roy Roberts.

“Today’s event, which we know was inspired by the parents of both schools, is a perfect example of that cooperation,” he said. “It’s a testament to their support of this merger and their eagerness for their children to be housed in a 21st century learning environment that meets the needs of today’s students.”

Roberts also announced that the adjacent Mackenzie High School, a 224,000 square foot structure closed in 2007, will be demolished by the district this summer.

Cass Technical High School Marching Band lead the parade to the last stop, which was at the new Mackenzie Preschool through 8th grade.

Inside the new state of the art Mackenzie Pre K to 8th grade school - sits a lavish media center immediately as you enter the building. The school will accommodate 850 students and it will feature a two-story "student arcade" that will be used as a dining court, student center and school square. The building design will focus on student safety and will be environmentally responsible.

The rally ended with a release of more than 1,000 white and blue balloons. 'There's something about balloons that gives a child reassurance that what they want to do in life is possible, confidence within themselves and the faith that everything will be alright.'
