Opening
of the
$21.1
million
school

More
than
1,000
Detroit
Public
School
students,
parents,
staff
and
community
members
of
Parker
Elementary
Middle
School
and
Barton
Elementary
school
gathered
at
Mackenzie
Pre K to
8 to
celebrate
its
grand
opening.
In
attendance
was
Emergency
Manager,
Roy
Rogers
who
briefly
spoke
about
the
status
of the
improvements
in all
of the
DPS
schools.
“I had
the
opportunity
to meet
the
community
leadership
in this
neighborhood
just a
few
weekends
ago and
was very
impressed
with the
level of
involvement
and
cooperation
here,”
said
Emergency
Manager
Roy
Roberts.
“Today’s
event,
which we
know was
inspired
by the
parents
of both
schools,
is a
perfect
example
of that
cooperation,”
he said.
“It’s a
testament
to their
support
of this
merger
and
their
eagerness
for
their
children
to be
housed
in a
21st
century
learning
environment
that
meets
the
needs of
today’s
students.”
Roberts
also
announced
that the
adjacent
Mackenzie
High
School,
a
224,000
square
foot
structure
closed
in 2007,
will be
demolished
by the
district
this
summer.
Cass
Technical
High
School
Marching
Band
lead the
parade
to the
last
stop,
which
was at
the new
Mackenzie
Preschool
through
8th
grade.
Inside
the new
state of
the art
Mackenzie
Pre K to
8th
grade
school -
sits a
lavish
media
center
immediately
as you
enter
the
building.
The
school
will
accommodate
850
students
and it
will
feature
a
two-story
"student
arcade"
that
will be
used as
a dining
court,
student
center
and
school
square.
The
building
design
will
focus on
student
safety
and will
be
environmentally
responsible.
The
rally
ended
with a
release
of more
than
1,000
white
and blue
balloons.
'There's
something
about
balloons
that
gives a
child
reassurance
that
what
they
want to
do in
life is
possible,
confidence
within
themselves
and the
faith
that
everything
will be
alright.'
