UAW-Ford, Lions Head Coach speak with DPS students about sportsmanship and mutual respect

DETROIT, MI (Tell Us Det) - Wednesday night the new Detroit Lions Head Coach Jim Caldwell and UAW-Ford teamed up to deliver a powerful message to more than 300 Detroit high school student-athletes about the importance of sportsmanship and respect for others.
At a dinner hosted by UAW-Ford, students from 18 Detroit Public Schools and the EAA (Education Achievement Authority) had an up-close-and-personal session with Coach Caldwell.

“Student-athletes are leaders at their schools,” said Caldwell. “But real leaders display sportsmanship, and make the right choices on and off the field.”

In addition to having their questions answered by the Lions coach following his presentation, the students will have the opportunity to engage one-on-one with several current and former NFL and NBA players.

UAW-Ford Vice President James Settles knows Detroit’s future rests with young people, and that youths need to understand violence is never a solution. “UAW-Ford is committed to the neighborhoods where our members live and work, and violence is far too prevalent,” said Settles. “Coach Caldwell recognizes that mutual respect is key to building good relationships and strong communities.”

Ford Motor Company Vice President of Labor Affairs Bill Dirksen agrees, adding, “Working together as one is a core value that we embrace at Ford Motor Company. “Whether it’s on the football field, the plant floor or in the boardroom, great sportsmanship and teamwork are the building blocks for excellence and success.”

Coach Jim Caldwell was joined by James Settles, UAW-Ford vice president and Bill Dirksen, Ford Motor Company vice president of labor affairs at the UAW-Ford Building located at151 W. Jefferson in downtown Detroit. Also invited to the diner was current and former NFL players: Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah, Lomas Brown, Larry Foote, Ron Rice, Reggie McKenzie, former NBA players Dave Bing, Willie Burton, Derrick Coleman, Mateen Cleaves, Jermaine Jackson and Jimmy King
