Detroit University Prep School students traveling to China on June 2 for 'Study Abroad Program'

DETROIT - The University Prep Schools Study Abroad Program is taking 16 curious middle school and high school students outside of the classroom to explore the world for the “Exploration of China” trip. U Prep students depart for a week-long trip to China beginning Thursday, June 2 to Monday, June 13.

In its eighth year, the U Prep Study Abroad Program has helped Detroit students expand their worldly knowledge through travel. The upcoming “Exploration of China” trip will be filled with stops to some of the country’s most historic sites such as the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, the Shanghai Museum and the People’s Square, where students will be taken on a walking tour of the French Concession.

Past trips have included Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Costa Rica, China, Peru, and Greece. Next year, students will once again travel to Italy and be one of the first schools in the area to travel to Cuba, guided by U Prep Study Abroad Coordinator Joshua Lopez.

“At U Prep Schools, we pride ourselves on giving students the access and opportunity to explore what is possible for their future,” said Mark Ornstein, CEO of University Prep Schools and Detroit 90/90. “The U Prep Study Abroad Program helps us take students out of the classroom to get a hands-on learning experience and this global perspective has an incredible impact on our students’ education and lives.”

Parents and students have planned fundraisers year-round to help defer the cost of travel; in addition to the annual Silent Auction Dinner and Golf Outing fundraisers hosted by U Prep. Those interested in sponsoring a student for the Study Abroad Program may contact Josephine Cook, U Prep Schools at josephine.cook@uprepschools.com or 313.549.5563.

Known as one of Detroit’s longest-standing tuition-free and non-profit public charter school systems, University Prep Schools encompasses two districts and seven campuses serving K-12 students from all corners of the city and beyond with the 90/90 Promise, which guarantees that 90 percent or more graduate and 90 percent or more are accepted to college. U Prep’s campuses were built by the Thompson Educational Foundation whose initiatives are focused on creating educational opportunities for Detroit youth.
