Title
I-eligible
students
commence
their
first
full day
at Dr.
Burt R.
Shurly
Camp on
Monday,
June 25,
where
campers
will
enjoy a
week of
nutritious
meals
and a
variety
of
academic
classes
and
outdoor
activities,
including
swimming
and
boating
from a
beautiful,
large
private
sandy
beach.
Camp
Burt
Shurly
is a
summer
camp
site
located
directly
on North
Lake,
just
outside
the
charming
community
of
Chelsea,
on 235
acres of
well-maintained
meadows
and
woods.
The
district
has
owned
the site
for more
than
four
decades.

Title
I-eligible
DPS
students
ages 7
to 12
years
old
enjoy a
six-day,
overnight
experience
at the
camp for
FREE.
Michigan-certified
teachers
offer
enrichment
in
Language
Arts,
Mathematics
and
Natural
Science.
Additional
emphasis
will be
placed
on
socialization,
character-building,
self
reliance
and
individual
creativity.
Title I
Funds
are used
to pay
the full
cost of
the camp
program.
There is
no cost
to
individual
schools
or
parents.
Cabins
are
staffed
24 hours
with a
Senior
Counselor
and a
Junior
Counselor.
A
full-time
health
care
staff
member,
a
full-time
social
worker
and
other
staff
are on
site at
all
times.
Transportation
is
provided
via
school
buses
with
pick-up
sites
located
throughout
the
city.
The camp
sessions
run
through
August
12.
About
900
students
are
expected
to
attend
throughout
the
summer.
