Select DPS students off to summer camp on scenic North Lake

Activities include Math and Reading classes, swimming, boating, archery, conflict resolution and more

NORTH LAKE, MI - Detroit Public Schools Title I-eligible students commence their first full day at Dr. Burt R. Shurly Camp on Monday, June 25, where campers will enjoy a week of nutritious meals and a variety of academic classes and outdoor activities, including swimming and boating from a beautiful, large private sandy beach.

Camp Burt Shurly is a summer camp site located directly on North Lake, just outside the charming community of Chelsea, on 235 acres of well-maintained meadows and woods. The district has owned the site for more than four decades.

Title I-eligible DPS students ages 7 to 12 years old enjoy a six-day, overnight experience at the camp for FREE. Michigan-certified teachers offer enrichment in Language Arts, Mathematics and Natural Science. Additional emphasis will be placed on socialization, character-building, self reliance and individual creativity.

Title I Funds are used to pay the full cost of the camp program. There is no cost to individual schools or parents. Cabins are staffed 24 hours with a Senior Counselor and a Junior Counselor. A full-time health care staff member, a full-time social worker and other staff are on site at all times. Transportation is provided via school buses with pick-up sites located throughout the city. The camp sessions run through August 12. About 900 students are expected to attend throughout the summer.
