Tell Us Detroit
The
event kicked off at 4:00 pm in the Riverview ballroom
with the laughter and smiles of all in attendance. The
room had an ambiance that could not be ignored. Looking
to your left there were beautiful baton twirlers and
looking to your right you could catch a glimpse of the
entire cheer team. The guests were patiently awaiting
the arrival of the MLK champions while the event staff
moved swiftly putting the finishing touches to a grand
evening.
In the midst of the Mayors speech that was filled with
humor, love, laughter, respect and tributes, US Rep.
Congresswoman Kilpatrick gave her tribute from a
mothers perspective to the young men that vigilantly
brought the victory home.
The stage was graced by a many city dignitaries from the
Detroit City Council to Chief of Police Ella Bully
Cummings that gave rave reviews and rewarding remarks to
all of the individuals who played a part in the winning
process. The mission enlightened the young men and
supporters as to how hard work and unity pays off when
you are focused and on one accord. This was not only a
message for the players but for the entire city due to
the fact that this is what Detroit is all about, Love
and Unity.
In the midst of all of the gracious words and remarks
there were checks presented on behalf of Motorola and
the Free Press from Lem Barney and other City business
constituents totaling a very rewarding amount that will
go towards the banquet and other needs that the
champions will incur while moving forward in their
endeavors.
After receiving the monetary gifts there were trophies
individually given to each player for their dedication
and tenacity. Some dignitaries, including the football
coach described the moment as a focused mission. As soon
as the team thought it was safe to do the victory dance
the Crusaders claimed what was rightfully theirs
becoming Detroit's first state champs of the field.
King defeated Midland, 47-21, on Nov. 23 to win the
state title and cap a 14-0 season.
This was truly a moment for calibration.
