Mayors Time After-School Fair
Radio Disney is a partner in the 2005 Mayors Time
After-School Fair, to be held on Saturday, September 17
from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Cobo Hall. New to Detroit (WFDF,
AM 910), Radio Disney broadcasts in 57 U.S. cities. An
active participant in community events, they will bring
their exciting live show, Radio Disney D-Tour Jam, to
the Mayors Time After-School Fair stage at noon and
will hold their Pop Squad Talent Search at 2 p.m..
In 2002, Mayors Time held the first city-wide
After-School Fair in the Detroit area, and possibly in
the nation. More than 15,000 parents and children
attended, as did 200 public and private after-school
providers, Governor Granholm and Mayor Kilpatrick.
Greater than 7,000 slots in after-school programs were
filled, enabling children and youth to participate in
activities such as sports, music, theater, computer and
academic activities.
That first Mayors Time After-School Fair demonstrated
the value of a city-wide effort to connect parents and
children with a wide array of activities. It has become
a model for similar programs in other parts of the
United States.
Studies show that after-school programs contribute
significantly to overall development and education of
our children. Yet, parents have indicated that they are
unaware of the after-school programs available in their
neighborhoods. The Mayors Time After-School Fair is one
significant way to increase awareness of a wide variety
of programs for children and youth.
The Mayors Time After-School Fair, held annually in the
fall, continues to attract a new audience of thousands
of parents and children, providing information and
registration for programs offered by hundreds of
after-school providers. More than 10,000 people and 200
after-school providers attended in 2003. In 2004, more
than 7,000 parents and children and 250 after-school
providers participated.
