Local Foundation Blends Theatre, Eats and Charity

The Bettie R. May Foundation is serious as a heart attack about ending the traumatic effects of lung cancer. On November 4, 2005, the Bettie R. May Foundation for small cell lung cancer will be hosting its Second Annual Theatre Party and Pre-Glow Reception at the Detroit Repertory Theatre to raise funds for various aspects of its mission. The featured play, entitled Heart Attack, will follow one hour after a champagne and hors doeuvres reception, which begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the event are $35.

The Bettie R. May Foundation for Small Cell Lung Cancer is committed to eliminating small cell lung cancer. Its goals include funding research for a cure of the small cell type of lung cancer and a screening protocol to detect lung cancer in its early, most curable, stages. In addition, the foundation provides services and programs to women with lung cancer, their caregivers, and families (particularly children and teens). It also provides "Hope, Cope & Care" packages free of charge to women who have lung cancer and are currently receiving treatment. These care kits will also be available as after care for women who have completed treatment, but who are still in need of emotional and spiritual support. The funds raised from the theatre party will go toward these efforts.

Since its inception in 2004, the Bettie R. May Foundation has been responsible for making notable strides concerning lung cancer awareness. Such steps include the "Light Up Your Life, Not a Cigarette" poster contest for elementary and middle school students, which will also take place this year and will include an essay and poetry contest open to all Metro Detroit students. The foundation has also hosted Lung Cancer Awareness Month programs such as the Cancer Answer Night with a panel of local experts, The Great American Smoke-Out event and Prayer Vigil, distributing Smoker's Quit Kits, as well as the First Annual Praise, Worship and Healing Service (non-denominational). The Foundations most recent accomplishment took place on October 15, 2005, when supporters enjoyed the First Annual Gala Ball and Silent Auction at Marygrove College.

About Bettie R. May Foundation
The 501(c)(3) organization is doing everything in its power to realize their vision statement: Imagine a World Without Lung Cancer. Imagine It's Because of You. Lung Cancer May Kill A Woman You Love. (TM) Lung cancer has killed more women than breast, colon, and ovarian cancer combined. It is the leading cancer killer, and while death rates among men are declining, they are increasing among women. Supporting the Bettie R. May Foundations efforts may help save a life.
