Detroit
building
demolition
project
will
continue
DETROIT

Representatives
from the
City of
Detroit
and
State of
Michigan
Department
of
Natural
Resources
and
Environment
(DNRE)
met
Tuesday
to
discuss
the
City's
demolition
plan for
2010.
The
survey
of 1123
Lewerenz,
one of
the
homes
already
demolished
as part
of this
project,
has been
completed
and no
asbestos
was
found.
The
debris
is being
removed
today.
City
officials
said
they
halted
the
project,
under
which
just one
house
has been
razed,
until
their
meeting
with
the
Department
of
Natural
Resources
and
Environment's.
A
spokesperson
from the
Mayor's
Office
released
a
statement
last
evening
saying,
"The
City of
Detroit's
2010
demolition
plan is
moving
forward
on
schedule
and in
compliance
with all
relevant
state
and
federal
regulations.
Today's
(Tuesday)
meeting
will
ensure
continued
cooperation
and
communication
between
the Bing
Administration
and the
State of
Michigan
to
continue
taking
down
dangerous
and
abandoned
structures
in the
City of
Detroit."
The DNRE
also
released
a
statement
commenting,
that the
DNRE and
City of
Detroit
agreed
that the
meeting
was
productive
and will
allow
the City
the
opportunity
to share
their
plans
and
timelines
for the
demolition
project,
and for
the DNRE
to
outline
the
procedures
necessary
to
ensure
compliance
with all
state
and
federal
regulations.
Both
parties
will
maintain
an
ongoing
dialogue
to
ensure
ongoing
compliance
and
cooperation."
City
officials
said
they
weren't
aware
the
program
was
violating
federal
regulations,
but have
filed
the
proper
paper
work as
of
Monday
morning.
The city
expects
to
resume
the
removal
of the
dangerous
structures
in
coming
days.
