City of Detroit welcomes 105 new Americans in first Naturalization Ceremony in over 30 years

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The City of Detroit Immigration Task Force, co-chaired by Council Member Raquel Castañeda-López and Council Member André Spivey, in collaboration with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, held a Naturalization Ceremony in over 30 yeas.

Mayor Mike Duggan, USCIS Director Mick Dedvukaj, Council Member Raquel Castañeda-López and Wojciech Zolnowski of the International Institute were all in attendence.

The event was a part of Immigrant Heritage Month and the Immigration Task Force’s mission of promoting a more diverse, inclusive, global city.

In honor of Immigrant Heritage Month, U.S. President Barack Obama wants Americans to share the stories of their families' immigrant roots.

"We are a nation of immigrants. It's a source of strength and something we can take pride in," he said.

The president also said, "We can't just celebrate this heritage, we have to defend it by fixing our broken immigration system."

This special event was held at Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, Erma L. Henderson Auditorium.
