SUSPECTS
WANTED
FOR
MURDER,
ATTEMPTED
MURDER,
CARJACKING,
AND MORE
DETROIT
- The
participants
of
Operation
Hemingway
have
dedicated
their
efforts
to the
memory
of FBI
Special
Investigative
Agent
Paul
Sorce,
who was
killed
in the
line of
duty
last
March
during
the
inaugural
Operation
Hemingway.
Detroit
Police,
working
with a
team of
local,
state
and
federal
agencies,
have
arrested
dozens
of
suspects
wanted
for some
of the
area’s
worst
crimes,
including
murder,
attempted
murder,
armed
robbery,
carjacking,
arson
and
rape,
Detroit
Police
Chief
Warren
Evans
announced
today.
Operation
Hemingway
was a
month
long
initiative
that
culminated
in a
weeklong
multi-agency
blitz
conducted
last
week.
Task
force
partners
initially
targeted
a pool
of 100
known
offenders
who had
new
warrants
for
murder
or
assault
with
intent
to
murder,
or
parole
violations
from
convictions
for
similar
offenses,
but did
not
limit
their
scope to
just
those
crimes.
“Because
we know
that
today’s
carjacker
or armed
robber
may be
tomorrow’s
murderer,
we went
after
anyone
we could
find who
had a
valid
warrant
for gun
crimes
or other
violent
offenses,”
Chief
Evans
said.
“In
addition
to
closing
numerous
previous
violent
crimes,
I have
not
doubt we
also
have
prevented
countless
more
from
occurring.”
Of the
72
apprehensions
made
during
Operation
Hemingway,
seven
suspects
were
arrested
for
murder,
Chief
Evans
said,
including:
• Samuel
Lee
Dantzler,
who,
along
with
three
other
men,
brutally
assaulted
Bernard
Hill
during
an
altercation
in the
20400
block of
W. Seven
Mile
Road. As
Hill
attempted
to
escape
his
attackers,
Dantzler
allegedly
fatally
shot
Hill in
the
head.
•
Derrick
Myers,
who
allegedly
shot and
killed
Charles
Lyons on
January
14, 2010
in the
11700
block of
Schaefer.
Myers
allegedly
pulled
up to
Lyons in
a purple
mini
van,
exited
the
vehicle
and
fired
one
shot,
fatally
striking
Lyons in
the
neck.
•
Michael
Rodell
Browning,
who
allegedly
shot and
killed
Gerald
Estell
on
February
10th
after
Estell
began
taunting
him.
According
to
witnesses,
Estell
had
gotten
the
better
of
Browning
during a
basement
wrestling
match.
Angered,
Browning
allegedly
produced
a
handgun
and
fired
one shot
at
Estell,
fatally
wounding
him
•
Brandon
Johnathan
Rhodman,
who
allegedly
participated
in the
fatal
drive by
shooting
of
Torrence
Campbell
on
December
14,
2009.
Rhodman
was
inside
the van
as it
rolled
up to
Campbell,
who was
standing
in front
of a
home on
Washburn.
As
Campbell
ran for
his
life,
one of
the
occupants
of the
van
opened
fire,
fatally
wounding
Campbell.
Task
force
officers
also
arrested
eight
suspects
on
warrants
for
attempted
murder.
Chief
Evans
said
Detroit
Police
also
were
able to
close 10
more
attempted
murder
cases
after
the case
review
portion
of
Operation
Hemingway
revealed
that
those
suspects
– for
whom
warrants
already
had been
obtained
– were
either
already
incarcerated
or now
deceased.
Nearly
20 other
suspects
were
arrested
for
charges
of armed
robbery,
carjacking
and
sexual
assaults,
while
many
more
already
convicted
of
similar
crimes
were
arrested
on
parole
violations
of
various
types.
“This is
the type
of good
work
that
results
from law
enforcement
partners
working
together
as one
for a
common
purpose,”
Chief
Evans
said.
“What
benefits
one
agency,
benefits
all
agencies
and
better
serves
our
residents.”
