New DPD
Headquarters
Announced
DETROIT
- As
promised
during
Mayor
Dave
Bing's
2010
State of
the City
address,
a new
Detroit
Public
Safety
Headquarters
has been
identified
and the
process
is
underway
to
purchase
the old
MGM
Grand
Casino
building
for
$6.32
million
on a
land
contract.
The
400,000
square
foot
building
will
house
DPD, DFD
and a
new
Crime
Lab and
represents
the
city's
on-going
efforts
to
consolidate
operations
to
increase
efficiency.
Selection
of the
old MGM
Grand
Casino
represents
reuse of
a viable
structure,
with
state-of-the
art
facilities
for
public
safety
use.
"I am
glad to
finally
be able
to move
our
officers
into a
safe,
sound
and
functional
structure
that is
also
citizen
friendly
and
accessible,"
said
Mayor
Dave
Bing.
"This
represents
an
important
step in
making
our city
more
operationally
efficient...and
safe."
Detroit
Police
Chief
Warren
Evans
said in
a
statement
released
to the
media,
"The
Mayor’s
decision
represents
a
significant
step
forward
for the
Detroit
Police
Department.
Having a
new
headquarters
will
allow us
to run a
much
more
efficient
and
cost-effective
operation.
It also
will be
a morale
boost
for our
officers,
who have
had to
wait too
long for
a new
headquarters.
The
inclusion
of a new
Detroit
crime
lab,
operated
by the
State
Police,
will
mean
that
criminal
cases
across
the
state
will
move
more
quickly
because
of
faster
evidence
processing."
The
building
is
expected
to be
ready by
Fall of
2012,
with
earlier
possible
departmental
phase-ins.
