DETROIT
(Tell Us
Det) -
Detroit’s
four
busiest
routes
will
pick up
passengers
every 15
minutes
in a new
initiative
rolled
out
today by
the
city’s
Department
of
Transportation.
The “415
Plan”
covers
the
Dexter
(#16),
Grand
River
(#21)
and
Woodward
(#53)
routes
from
6:00 AM
to 6:00
PM
weekdays.
Effective
immediately,
the plan
will
also
increase
service
on the
same
four
routes
after
6:00 PM.
Fares
will not
go up as
a result
of
improved
transit
and no
routes
will be
cut
under
the 415
Plan.
Ron
Freeland,
the CEO
of the
Detroit
Department
of
Transportation
unveiled
the plan
Monday;
he said
efforts
to
improve
the
quality
and
reliability
of bus
transportation
were a
directive
from the
Mayor’s
office.
With
improved
efficiency,
on time
schedules
and
increased
productivity,
Freeman
expects
to see
increased
ridership
once
riders
realize
they can
depend
on the
reliability
of the
new
schedule.
Right
now
approximately
34% of
daily
bus
ridership
is along
the four
routes
of the
415
Plan.
Depending
on the
impact
of the
new
initiative,
it may
expand
to other
routes.
Detroit
Mayor
Dave
Bing
joined
Freeland
for the
announcement
at the
Rosa
Parks
Transit
Center
he said
in order
to make
improvements
“we to
listened
to our
riders,
we
listened
to our
employees”
who all
said bus
service
is not
being
well
managed.
An
outside
firm was
brought
in to
assess
the
system
and
implement
changes.
As a
result,
Bing
said
necessary
improvements
are
being
made to
a system
that had
become
costly
and
unreliable.
