challenge
by

Monica

has
resigned
her
position
as
President
Pro Tem
of the
Detroit

Last
week

pleaded
guilty
to one
count of
bribery
for
accepting
payment
from
Synagro

exchange
for a
vote to
approve
the
company’s
sludge-treatment
contract
with the
city.

submitted
a letter
of
resignation
Monday
stating
her
decision
to step
down
from
Council
effective
July 6.
Today’s
action
by
Conyers,
ends
speculation
on
whether
she
would
step
down
after a
tumultuous
career
on
Detroit’s
City
Council.
Sentencing
in the
bribery
case is
pending
but
Conyers
could
face up
to five
years in
prison . In
pleading
guilty
to a
federal
crime,
Monica
Conyers
has
essentially
forfeited
her seat
on
Detroit’s
City
Council
that is
the
message
Council
President
Ken
Cockrel
delivered
in a
morning
news
conference
flanked
by
council
members
Shelia
Cockrel,
Joann
Watson,
Kwame
Kenyatta,
Alberta
Tinsley-Talabi
and
Brenda
Jones
Council
President
Cockrel
ended
speculation
on
whether
Conyers
should
retain
office
and said
unless
she
resigns
immediately,
Council
had
planned to
remove
Conyers
from her
all
committee
assignments
and the
council
itself.
