2006 FREEDOM FESTIVAL FIREWORKS -
IT�S A FAMILY AFFAIR
DETROIT� This year, the 48th Annual Freedom Festival
Fireworks display is scheduled for Wednesday, June 28 at
10:06 p.m. In an effort to provide a safe and enjoyable
experience for all, the Detroit Police Department is
employing various measurers to ensure that spectators of
all ages will continue to have a pleasurable time at
major events in the city of Detroit.
�
Parents are advised to abide by the City of Detroit�s
curfew ordinance and should not drop children off and
leave. In addition, due to the restricted vehicular
access into Downtown, parents will not be able to pick
them up.
� The current curfew is: 15 years old and under � 10
p.m.; 16 and 17 years old � 11 pm.
As far as parking and crowd monitoring in the Downtown
area and Belle Isle is concerned, it is important to
note that:
HART PLAZA
� Hart Plaza and all other viewing sites will be closed
when the desired capacity is reached.
� At 6 P.M., all vehicular traffic will be closed South
of Fort (Between Rosa Parks {on the West} and I-375 {on
the East})
� From 6 A.M. through 2 A.M., no parking will be
permitted on Fort, or South of Fort (Between Rosa Parks
{on the West} and I-375 {on the East}). NO PARKING signs
will be posted.
� Parking garages and surface lots located South of Fort
will be inaccessible after
6 P.M.
� No pets, alcohol or other contraband will be allowed
on Hart Plaza. All coolers are subject to search.
� No spectator viewing will be permitted on E. Jefferson
from Woodward to Randolph, or island.
� After dark, Hart Plaza will be illuminated with large
floodlights up to the time that the fireworks are
released. The floodlights will be reactivated following
the conclusion of the fireworks display.
� More than 100 stationary cameras will be deployed to
monitor the crowds at various locations. A number of
mobile cameras will also be utilized. These cameras will
assist in determining the desired capacity of certain
areas not just in the Downtown areas, but at all
locations.
BELLE ISLE
� Belle Isle will be closed when the desired capacity is
reached.
� There will be no overnight camping on Belle Isle,
Tuesday, June 27.
� On Tues., June 27, the 10 p.m. ordinance (which closes
access to Belle Isle) shall be enforced.
� Access to Belle Isle will occur no sooner than 6 a.m.
on Wednesday, June 28
� Tents can be posted on Belle Isle only on Wed., June
28. All tents shall be opened at all times � This shall
be enforced.
BEST VIEWING LOCATIONS:
To watch the spectacular Festival Fireworks, the
following locations have been identified for having the
BEST viewing sites:
� Hart Plaza
� Belle Isle (viewing from the MacArthur Bridge will not
be permitted)
� Chene Park
� St. Aubin Park
� Riverside Park
� Mt. Elliot Park
� Tri-centennial Park
� Owen Park
� Erma Henderson Park
� Fort Wayne � There is an entry fee per car. (No
alcohol or BBQ grills)
Last year there were about 1,300 members of the Detroit
Police Department patrolling the viewing areas, this
year there will be additional personnel assigned. In
addition to the uniformed, undercover and plain clothes
DPD officers, the Wayne County Sheriffs Department,
Michigan State Police, US. Border Patrol and the U.S.
Coast Guard will also be assisting with traffic and
patrol.
PEOPLE MOVER:
The People Mover has extended its hours from 6:30 a.m.
on June 28 until 1:30 a.m. on June 29.
MISSING CHILDREN:
Last year, throughout the metropolitan Detroit area, a
crowd of approximately 1.3 million spectators watched
the Freedom Festival Fireworks. This year, we are
expecting a large crowd, and it is imperative that
parents are mindful and watchful of their children
during this family outing.
All missing children found shall be taken to one of the
following locations:
Downtown area
� Detroit Police Department Central Events � 20 Atwater
(At Bates)
� Hart Plaza Underground DPD�s Information Station
� Detroit Police Department Central District � 500
Clinton
Belle Isle
� Detroit Police Department Harbor Master Station,
located on Riverbank Drive, Belle Isle, next to Shelter
