DPW TO HOST 3 INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS ABOUT BULK AND YARD WASTE COLLECTION IN THE NEXT DETROIT
Bulk and Yard Waste collection will resume next month

The Department of Public Works will hold three informational meetings to assist residents with becoming more familiar with bulk and Yard Waste collection in the NEXT Detroit.

The meetings will be held on:

1. Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at the Samaritan Center located on 5555 Conner Ave., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

2. Thursday, September 28, 2006 at Northwest Activities Center located at 18100 Meyers, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

3. Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at Detroit Workforce Development Offices located at 1300 Rosa Parks Ave., from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Citizens can RSVP for the meetings by calling 313-224-4415.

New seasonal bulk and yard waste collection will begin in October and the Department of Public Works (DPW). Residents will soon receive an 11" by 17" full-color brochure entitled "2006-2007 Bulk and Yard Waste Information and Collection Calendar" containing important information about the new seasonal bulk collection rules and procedures along with collection dates for each household.

Each "2006-2007 Bulk and Yard Waste Information and Collection Calendar" will have five collection dates-one for 2006 and four for 2007-for that particular neighborhood.

"Some neighborhoods will have their first bulk collection in October and others will have it in November or December," Square said. "Bulk will not be collected every month. DPW will only collect it from a citizens' home on the dates printed on the mailer. Those that place bulk at the curb before their scheduled date will be issued a fine by our Department of Environmental Affairs." (DEA)

Residents will be allowed to place up to one cubic yard of bulk in front of their home on their scheduled collection day. One cubic yard is equivalent to the size of a refrigerator, couch or stove. It cannot weigh more than 1,000 pounds. Bulk items totaling more than one cubic yard or weighing more than 1,000 pounds will not be collected, and the homeowner will be subject to a fine of up to $10,000.

"Our workers will be strict about how much they pickup," said Alfred Jordan, Deputy Director of Department of Public Works.
"We will not pick up more than one cubic yard and any bulk pile that is more than that will not be collected and DEA will come behind our trucks and issue the appropriate fine."

The "2006-2007 Bulk and Yard Waste Information and Collection Calendar" will also include information about a new yard waste collection schedule, the new holiday tree collection, as well as bulk drop-off locations.

Yard Waste Collection
The Department of Public Works service model for the NEXT Detroit includes providing homeowners with yard waste collection. DPW will pick up yard waste-leaves, grass clippings, and twigs-on the same day as residents' scheduled weekly trash collection.

All yard waste must be placed on the curb at least six feet from the Courville container in biodegradable paper bags or a personal garbage can. DPW will not collect yard waste in plastic bags. Setting out yard waste more than 24 hours before the scheduled pick-up will result in a fine.

Yard waste collection for 2006 will begin in October and last through the first week of December (weather permitting). The yard waste collection schedule for 2007 will begin in May and last through the first week of December (weather permitting).

Also, as part of DPW's NEXT Detroit service model, they will conduct holiday tree collection in 2007 during the first two weeks of January. Citizens wishing to utilize this service will be required to place their holiday tree near their Courville container for pick up on the same day as their weekly trash collection. Residents setting out holiday trees more than 24 hours before their scheduled pick-up will be subject to a fine.

Bulk Drop Off Locations
DPW will continue its practice of providing City residents, with proper identification; the option to take items to any one of six bulk drop off locations. Residents are limited to one load per household, per day, not to exceed one cubic yard, or 1,000 pounds. DPW will not accept construction, or remodeling debris (including shingles), household or commercial garbage, or tree stumps.
