PARKING METERS EXPIRE IN DETROIT, MAKE WAY FOR
HIGH-TECH PAY STATIONS
New pay stations accept any coin combination
On
Monday, July 24, the Municipal Parking Department will
activate new parking pay stations in the Wayne State
area. Replacing single space parking meters, these
innovative kiosks can serve up to 10 on-street parking
spaces per station, and will allow for customers to use
any combination of coin, and eventually will accept
debit and credit cards.
The pay stations will provide additional payment
features to better serve our customers on-street parking
needs, said Ronald Ruffin, Municipal Parking Director.
This new system brings us in-line with the parking
technology used around the country.
Municipal Parking began installing 45 parking pay
stations in the Wayne State University area along West
Warren (Woodward to the Lodge) on July 17.
Installation of the remaining pay stations will take
place July 24-28 in these areas:
Anthony Wayne Drive (West Warren to Kirby)
Cass Avenue (West Warren to Palmer Street)
 Putnam Street (Cass to Woodward)
 Woodward (West Warren to Kirby)
The pay stations installed during the week of
July
17 will be activated on Monday, July 24 and those
installed during the week of July 24 will be activated
on Monday, July 31. Parking ambassadors will be on site
to answer questions and pass out literature to
customers.
Municipal Parking will install a total of 175 pay
stations in the Wayne State, New Center, and Central
Business District areas by October of this year. There
are 3,935 single space parking meters throughout the
City of Detroit.
We want to make parking in the NEXT Detroit less
cumbersome for residents and visitors, Ruffin said.
The new pay stations will be easy to use.
A parking customer will utilize the parking pay
station as follows:
1. CHECK the parking space number. Numbered space
marker sleeves will be placed over existing single space
meter poles (i.e. 1, 2, 3 ).
2. Proceed to the pay station and SELECT, by punching in
the identifying space number on the digital display
panel.
3. PAY for the desired amount of time.
4. GO to your destination.
