MAYOR KILPATRICK ANNOUNCES PLANS TO KEEP CITY RUNNING WHILE COLEMAN A. YOUNG MUNICIPAL CENTER IS BEING REPAIRED

DETROIT--Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick announced the plan to continue government operations while repairs are being made to the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center after power was lost do to three high performance transformers being zapped by lighting. The building is expected to be closed for at least 10 days.

"We are prepared to keep the city running," said Mayor Kilpatrick. "When we found out the building was going to be closed, we immediately began to take action. Our team has stepped up to the challenge in order to keep providing essential services to our residents and keep our employees informed."

Mayor Kilpatrick this afternoon implemented Executive Order #7. This order is the policy dealing with service and time keeping policies during unusual operating conditions.

All city employees assigned to the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center are relieved of duty until further notice and allowed to use vacation or compensatory time, or receive no pay time during the period the CAYMAC will be closed.

All employees involved in essential work who will be required to report to work will be notified by their supervisor.

Primary city services such as Police, Fire, Water, Public Works, Recreation, Health, Department of Transportation, Public Lighting, Municipal Parking, People Mover, City Airport, General Services, and Building Safety &Engineering will continue to operate without interruption. "Primary city services will not be affected," said Mayor Kilpatrick. "Fires will still be extinguished, trash will be picked up, grass will be cut and the bad guys will be arrested."

Human Resources
-All Human Resources Payroll Employees should report to OEDS located at 1300 Rosa Parks, Monday, June 30, 2008 at 8 a.m.

311 Center
-All 311 Center employees should report to Michigan Hall located in Cobo Conference Center, Monday, June 30, 2008 at 8:30 a.m.

Building Safety &Engineering
-Project managers of construction projects in need of inspection should call 313-628-1920 on Monday, June 30, 2008.

Detroit Police
-Citizens will not be able to obtain copies of their crime reports, but they can obtain accident reports on Line

City Council Accommodations
-City Council operations will be relocated to a designated room in Cobo Conference Center and Council's public session scheduled for Monday, June 30 will be located in room W1-54.

City Clerk Accommodations
-The City Clerk's offices will also be relocated to MI-48 in Cobo Conference Center
At about 3:30 p.m. on Friday, lighting struck a Detroit Water and Sewerage Department pumping station on the Detroit Riverfront at Bagley, which then zapped three high performance transformers inside of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, causing it to lose power. Occupants of the building were evacuated in an orderly fashion around 4:30 p.m. No one was injured. The extent of the damage remains unclear, however, the building is not expected to reopen for at least 10 days.
