Coleman A. Young Municipal Center Auditorium to be renamed Erma L. Henderson Auditorium

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The auditorium in the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center has been renamed The Erma L. Henderson Auditorium. Colleagues, family, friends, and supporters officially dedicate The Erma L. Henderson Auditorium for Detroit’s first African American Councilwoman and leading advocate for women, civil and human rights. Mrs. Henderson joined the Detroit City Council in a runoff election to fill a vacancy in 1972 and was re-elected the following year. She received the majority votes in three consecutive city council elections (1977, 1981 and 1985) to serve as president of the legislative body for each of the four-year terms.

As one of the most prominent African American women elected to public office in Detroit, Mrs. Henderson's place in the city’s history is impaneled. The auditorium renaming is a testament and recognition of her dedication, commitment, leadership and achievements.
