Detroit Mayor Bing salutes volunteers and city agencies for efforts on Halloween weekend

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Mayor Dave Bing today credited the efforts of Detroit Fire, Homeland Security and Police departments, municipal departments, and the over 27,000 thousand volunteers who joined together to successfully patrol the city during the three-night Angels’ Night weekend.

As a result, the Detroit Fire Department reported, 169 total fires over the three-night Angels’ Night period. This figure is comparable to the average daily fire total 35-40. There were 119 fires reported in 2009. This was not much more than usual, said Karen Dumas, spokeswoman for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.

During a Monday press conference Mayor Bing said, “I want to thank the thousands of volunteers and citizens who spent countless hours over the weekend to adopt abandoned structures, keep an eye on their neighborhood, and patrol the streets of Detroit to keep the city and its residents safe." “Their efforts are an inspiration and speak to the passion, commitment and indomitable spirit of Detroit.”

Mayor Bing also expressed gratitude to the many City employees and corporate sponsors whose efforts and generosity were critical to the success of the campaign.

The 2010 Angels’ Night campaign started months before the actual weekend as Detroit Homeland Security brought together personnel from Detroit Fire and Police to identify areas with higher potential frequency of fires.

The city says fires reported last year over the three-day period was down from 136 in 2008. More than 800 fires were started in 1984, the height of what then was known as Devils' Night.

2010 Volunteer Effort:
27, 569 volunteers pre-registered from across the city in a variety of capacities, including car patrols (3,665), foot patrols (606), providing meals and supporting administrative tasks. This count does not reflect those who registered over the three-night period.
