DETROIT
CITY
CLERK
PROVIDES
INFORMATION
ON
UPCOMING
SPECIAL
ELECTION
The City
of
Detroit
special
primary
election
will be
held on
Tuesday,
February
24.
Voters
will
vote for
a mayor
to serve
the
remainder
of
former
Mayor
Kwame
Kilpatrick's
term,
which
expires
December
31,
2009.
The top
two
candidates
with the
highest
vote
totals
in the
special
primary
election
will be
on the
ballot
on the
special
general
election
to be
held on
Tuesday,
May 5.
There
will
also be
six
municipal
millage
renewal
proposals
on the
ballot.
All of
the
regular
polling
sites
will be
open for
the
special
election
during
the
normal
election
day
hours of
7 a.m.
to 8
p.m.
The City
of
Detroit
Department
of
Elections
has
mailed
out
absentee
ballots
and is
currently
accepting
absentee
ballot
requests
for the
special
primary
election.
Those
who wish
to run
in the
regular
municipal
primary
scheduled
for
August
4, 2009,
must
meet the
filing
deadline
of
Tuesday,
May 12
-- this
includes
the
winner
of the
special
election.
The top
two vote
recipients
from the
general
primary
election
on
August 4
will
move on
to the
regular
general
election
on
Tuesday,
November
3.
Swearing
in for
the
winner
of the
mayoral
general
election
of
November
3 is
Friday,
January
1, 2010.
The term
of
office
for the
new
mayor is
four
years.
