Greektown's Outdoor Patio Season Extended Through October 31

Detroiters Also Invited Downtown to Celebrate Greektown at Sundown’s Final Weekend: Sept. 4-6

DETROIT, MI – After a successful summer launch and increased pedestrian and restaurant traffic, eight new outdoor patios along Monroe Street in downtown Detroit’s historic Greektown entertainment district will remain open daily for al fresco dining (food and liquor) through Saturday, October 31, weather permitting. Labor Day weekend also marks the grand finale of the Greektown at Sundown summer special event series in the district.

The extended patio season builds on Greektown at Sundown, the inaugural weekend event series kicked off by the Greektown Preservation Society in July, which introduced the new patios. Eight restaurants along Monroe Street between Beaubien and St. Antoine Streets feature street side patio seating including: Santorini Estiatorio, Pappy’s Grill, Golden Fleece, Krema, Plaka, Astoria Bakery, Pizza Papalis and Red Smoke Barbeque.

Labor Day weekend is the last weekend of special programming for Greektown at Sundown which closes Monroe Street to vehicle traffic and opens it up for outdoor dining and lively entertainment including hands-on art, music, exhibits and more. The event series was a collaborative effort led by the member businesses of the Greektown Preservation Society, Rock Ventures, Opportunity Detroit and Greektown Casino-Hotel.

“The outdoor patios are very popular with our customers and we have seen a significant increase in foot traffic and revenue compared to summer 2014,” said Athina Papas, co-owner of Santorini Estiatorio and treasurer of the Greektown Preservation Society. “Extending the patio season is a perfect way to help Detroiters experience summer in Greektown as long as possible. And the city, state, business and community support has been great.”

Award-winning photographer Eric Perry will also keep his pop-up gallery at 567 Monroe Street open through December. The exhibit, titled Forward Detroit, will feature images from Greektown this summer. The gallery is open every Friday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
