DETROIT,
MI –
After a
successful
summer
launch
and
increased
pedestrian
and
restaurant
traffic,
eight
new
outdoor
patios
along
Monroe
Street
in
downtown
Detroit’s
historic
Greektown
entertainment
district
will
remain
open
daily
for al
fresco
dining
(food
and
liquor)
through
Saturday,
October
31,
weather
permitting.
Labor
Day
weekend
also
marks
the
grand
finale
of the
Greektown
at
Sundown
summer
special
event
series
in the
district.
The
extended
patio
season
builds
on
Greektown
at
Sundown,
the
inaugural
weekend
event
series
kicked
off by
the
Greektown
Preservation
Society
in July,
which
introduced
the new
patios.
Eight
restaurants
along
Monroe
Street
between
Beaubien
and St.
Antoine
Streets
feature
street
side
patio
seating
including:
Santorini
Estiatorio,
Pappy’s
Grill,
Golden
Fleece,
Krema,
Plaka,
Astoria
Bakery,
Pizza
Papalis
and Red
Smoke
Barbeque.
Labor
Day
weekend
is the
last
weekend
of
special
programming
for
Greektown
at
Sundown
which
closes
Monroe
Street
to
vehicle
traffic
and
opens it
up for
outdoor
dining
and
lively
entertainment
including
hands-on
art,
music,
exhibits
and
more.
The
event
series
was a
collaborative
effort
led by
the
member
businesses
of the
Greektown
Preservation
Society,
Rock
Ventures,
Opportunity
Detroit
and
Greektown
Casino-Hotel.
“The
outdoor
patios
are very
popular
with our
customers
and we
have
seen a
significant
increase
in foot
traffic
and
revenue
compared
to
summer
2014,”
said
Athina
Papas,
co-owner
of
Santorini
Estiatorio
and
treasurer
of the
Greektown
Preservation
Society.
“Extending
the
patio
season
is a
perfect
way to
help
Detroiters
experience
summer
in
Greektown
as long
as
possible.
And the
city,
state,
business
and
community
support
has been
great.”
Award-winning
photographer
Eric
Perry
will
also
keep his
pop-up
gallery
at 567
Monroe
Street
open
through
December.
The
exhibit,
titled
Forward
Detroit,
will
feature
images
from
Greektown
this
summer.
The
gallery
is open
every
Friday
through
Sunday
from 12
p.m. to
8 p.m.
