WOMEN’S CLUBS HOLDS 73RD NATIONAL CONVENTION AT DETROIT

Washington,
D.C. – The National Association of Negro Business and
Professional Women’s Clubs Inc (NANBPWC) will hold its 73rd
national convention at the Marriott Detroit Renaissance
Center July 27 through August 3. Several programs are open
to the public including the Business Women’s Luncheon,
Thursday, July 31 with Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President,
Bennett College, author, economist and commentator as
keynote speaker.
Dr. Julianne Malveaux is a noted economist, author,
commentator and businesswoman. Well-known for appearances on
national network programs,
Dr.
Malveaux is a charismatic and popular guest on CNN, BET, as
well as on Howard University’s Television show, Evening
Exchange. She has appeared on PBS’s To The Contrary, ABC’s
Politically Incorrect, Fox News Channel’s O’Reilly Factor
and stations such as C-SPAN, MSNBC and CNBC. She has also
hosted talk radio programs in Washington, San Francisco, and
New York. Currently, she has a show in development, The
Malveaux Report: An Economic Perspective, that will be
presented on PBS through Howard University’s WHUT-TV.

featuring Bennett College President Dr. Julianne Malveaux
are available for purchase at $60.
With more than 3,000 members and 375 clubs in the United
States, Bermuda and Africa, some 500 NANBPWC delegates will
travel to the “motor city” for the convention featuring a
community forum, workshops, classical vocal arts
competition, vendor marketplace and business women’s
luncheon.
“I
am proud to host this illustrious group of business and
professional women for this annual meeting in my hometown,
said Detroit’s Sandra A. Coleman, 21st National President of
NANBPWC. Ms. Coleman, a graduate of Wayne State University
who received her Masters of Public Administration from
Harvard University, began her career with the Detroit Police
Department and was appointed Deputy Director of the Planning
and Development Department in 1996 by then Mayor Dennis
Archer before retiring in July 2002.
Other events at the convention that are open to the
public include:
• A Community Forum and Reception on Tuesday, July 29 from
7-9 p.m. (Free)
• Vendor Marketplace and Exhibitors’ Showcase featuring
local and out of town vendors with items from jewelry and
artwork to fashion opening July 31 at noon and open daily
from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Closes August 2 at 3 p.m.
• Vocal Arts Competition & Reception* for emerging
artists showcasing some of the best young classical vocalist
from across the country, Wednesday, July 30 from 7:30 p.m.
until 10 p.m. Attire is after five. NANBPWC has supported
promising young Black classical vocalist since 1983 through
our vocal arts competition, providing them performance
venues and scholarships. The competition begins on the local
level and the first place district winners compete at the
National Convention (Free)
• Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President, Bennett College and 18th
National President of NANBPWC. will deliver the keynote
address at the business women’s luncheon Thursday, July 31
from 11:45 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. (Advance tickets are
available for $60)
The National Association of Negro Business and Professional
Women’s Clubs, Inc. with headquarters in Washington, D.C.
was founded in 1935. Its mission is to promote and protect
the interest of African American business and professional
women, serve as a bridge for young people seeking to enter
business and the professions, to improve the quality of life
in the local and global communities and to foster good
fellowship.
