annual
Trade
Dinner
of the
Detroit
Association
of
Grocery
Manufacturers’
Representatives,
(DAGMR)
an
affiliate
of
Michigan
Food and
Beverage
Association
was held at
the
Atheneum
Suite
Hotel in
downtown
Detroit
Tuesday,
Dec 1.
DAGMR is
an
association
whose
members
include
wholesalers,
jobbers,
retailers,
food
companies,
processors,
and
brokers
throughout
Michigan
and is
an
affiliate
of
Michigan
Food and
Beverage
Association
(MFBA).
Featured
guest
speaker
will be
Mayor
Dave
Bing of
Detroit.
Detroit
Mayor
Dave
Bing was
guest
speaker
for the
evening's
event.
Giving
praise
to the
group
for the
good work
they do
in the
community,
the
mayor
said, "I
do
believe
that the
city of
Detroit
is worth
fighting
for, and
I'm
sure, a
lot of
you with
businesses
here
feel the
same
way."
Bing
went on
to say,
I've got
to make
sure we
(the
city)
become
more
business
friendly
than we
have
been
historically,
and
understand
that you
are the
customer."
The
Mayor
concluded
by
thanking
the
retailers
for
supporting
Detroit.
Standing
in for
MBPA-Michigan
Food and
Beverage
Association
president
Ed Deeb,
who was
under
the
weather,
was the
evening's
hosts
Jennifer
Kluge
Vice
President
of
Michigan
Business
&
Professional
Association
and Tom
Bitterman,
DAGMR
President
and
owner of
Michigan
based
Win
Schuler
Foods.
Bitterman
commented,
"Unfortunately
the
Michigan
economy
is not
in
holiday
spirit.
But as
most of
you
know,
and
lived
through
the
early
80's
those of
us who
re-benchmarked
our
businesses
and
focused
our
strategies
on
conditions
and the
opportunities,
when the
market
turns
around,
as it
will,
you'll
have
that
great
performance."
Retailers
and
wholesale
distributors
gathered
to get
re-acquainted
with old
friends
and meet
new
friends
at this
annual
meeting.

The
DAGMR
dinner
featured
the
presentation
of
annual
awards.
Being
honored
were:
Retailer
of the
Year
–
Hiller’s
Markets,
headquartered
in
Southfield,
James
Hiller,
President.
While
accepting
his
award
Hiller
said, "I
was born
in
Detroit,
I grew
up in
Detroit,
I was
schooled
in
Detroit,
and I'm
inspired
to
believe
that all
of our
futures
are
secure
in
Detroit.
I am
honored
to
receive
this
award on
behalf
of all
the
people
who have
made
Hiller's
what it
is
today."
Wholesaler
of the
Year
–
Sherwood
Foods,
headquartered
in
Detroit,
Earl
Isbia,
President.
In his
acceptance
Isbia
stated,
"I don't
conceder
it as my
own
award,
where as
I look
at it as
something
achieved
through
a lot of
hard
work and
perseverance.
One of
the
reasons
we've
been
able to
be
successful
over the
years
are the
people
behind
the
company."
Restaurateur
of the
Year
– Matt
Prentice,
headquartered
in
Bingham
Farms.
On
receiving
his
award
Prentices
said,
"To be
included
in such
a group
is
tremendous
and I
thank
you for
that.
I'm very
happy
that
Dave
Bing
decided
to take
the job
and
bring
integrity
back to
our
mayor's
office."
A
special
award
was
presented
to Susan
Selasky
of the
Detroit
Free
Press
who will
receive
the
Distinguished
Service
Award in
Food
Journalism.
During
Selasky's
remarks
she
said, "
I'm so
very
honored
to be
here
tonight
to
accept
this
award.
It is
very
special
to me
because
it's my
first
professional
award."
