DDA Approves Development Agreements for $175 Million in Mixed-use Projects in The District Detroit

DETROIT - The city of Detroit Downtown Development Authority has approved development agreements for the $150 million Little Caesars World Headquarters Campus Expansion and the $24.4 million first phase of a mixed-use building on Henry Street.

“These agreements are tremendous news for the city and show that The District Detroit is delivering additional jobs to Detroit workers and companies,” said Rod Miller, President and CEO of The Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. “The fact that these projects have moved forward this quickly is especially encouraging, and we look forward to even more progress.”

“From day one we have been committed to a Michigan Made, Detroit Built project that puts Detroiters and Detroit businesses to work,” said Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc. “We’re pleased to continue our organization’s long history of creating economic opportunities for Detroiters and Detroit businesses.”

Construction on the $150 million, nine-story, 234,000 square foot Little Caesars World Headquarters Campus Expansion in The District Detroit’s Columbia Street neighborhood is already underway. Expected to be complete in 2018, the building is Detroit’s first newly constructed corporate headquarters in more than a decade and only the seventh since 1950. Detroit-based construction manager Brinker-Christman is leading the building’s construction, with Detroit-based architect SmithGroupJJR responsible for design.

The mixed-use building located on Henry Street near Little Caesars Arena in The District Detroit’s Woodward Square neighborhood will create significant parking options for residents, visitors and fans and is expected to house thousands of square feet of exciting new retail space. Concepts for residential and office space uses in the building are also currently being explored. Detroit-based joint venture Colisanti-MiG is serving as the construction manager for the $24.4 million first phase of the building currently underway.

The District Detroit, a world-class sports and entertainment development will revitalize 50 blocks of underutilized land in the city into new restaurants, shops, residences and offices connecting Midtown to Downtown Detroit into one vibrant, walkable area. The project is one of the largest of its kind in the country and home to three professional sports venues and six theaters. Including these projects, Little Caesars Arena and its surrounding office and retail spaces, the Ilitch organization has broken ground on more than $1 billion in projects in Detroit in the last two years, bringing thousands of construction and construction-related jobs to the city, region and state.

Data from the University of Michigan demonstrates that The District Detroit will ultimately account for an economic impact of more than $2 billion by 2020 and create 12,500 construction and construction-related jobs and 1,100 permanent jobs. To date The District Detroit has awarded more than $315 million in contracts to Detroit businesses (nearly 60 percent of contracts awarded) and more than $500 million in contracts to Michigan businesses (more than 90 percent of contracts awarded).
