14th Annual Urban Wheel Awards A Gala Afair

There’s no party like a Detroit Party that has a theme called, “Stimulating Minority Business Development”. This year’s networking and award celebration was held in the beautiful Sound Board Room at MotorCity Casino Hotel. LisaRaye McCoy was the enthusiastic and beautiful hostess who kept the audience engaged in the festivities.

There were familiar names and faces everywhere. During a conversation with Roop Raj, Fox2 News Reporter, there was agreement that there was an air of enthusiasm being expressed by the attendees. The dismal economic conditions were being set aside so that the positive light of hope could shine through and see the vision of a better future. Mayor Dave Bing’s message reminded us that Detroit citizens have a desire to give whatever it takes to bring us back to days of productivity. Minority business owners have a definite stake in this movement so this year’s theme is quite appropriate.

Presidents Obama sent congratulatory messages to the award recipients. Rev. Jesse Jackson received the Inaugural Urban Wheel Pioneer Award for his contributions to the establishment of minority dealership associations and suppliers. Three women were recognized for Lifetime Achievement Awards because they assumed roles of extraordinary leadership to make pathways for others to follow: Susan Au Allen-president US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce; Juanita Ragland Doby, vice president Human Resources, Volvo Cars North America; Irma B. Elder, CEO, The Elder Automotive Group. The other awardee included: Roderick D. Gillum, (retired) vice president, Corporate Responsibility and Diversity, General Motors.

Suppliers were awarded for their steadfast determination to keep the industry engaged in the new technology geared toward efficiency and safety.
Mr. Randi Payton, President & CEO, On Wheels Media accomplished a wonderful feat by honoring the accomplishments of the many who are leading Michigan into a new chapter that will demonstrate diversity and inclusion.
