DRIVEN: The history of African Americans in the Auto Industry

DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - The stories and triumphs of African Americans who have risen from the plant floor to the corporate boardroom are chronicled in DRIVEN: A Tribute to African American Achievement in the Automotive Industry.

The publication was unveiled Wednesday evening at Cobo Hall’s Riverview Ballroom before hundreds of the very auto industry executives, suppliers, and car dealers celebrated in the landmark volume.

The most complete compilation of African American contributions to the automobile industry, “DRIVEN” captures success stories from insiders at General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, the UAW, Toyota and Honda.

Smartly divided into sections, “DRIVEN” casts a spotlight on: Living Legends, Most Influential, Interesting Personalities, Emerging Leaders, Shifting Into High Gear and individuals On the Move.

In the pages of The Road Most Traveled, a timeline notes major milestones, including this fact, in 1893 C.R. Patterson & Sons of Green field, Ohio “becomes the first African-American founded and owned automotive manufacturing company.”

Bill Perkins, vice-chairman of the NAIAS and president of Bill Perkins Automotive Group says on the back cover of the publication, “This is the first time in the history of automotive literature that a publication has accomplished the task of honoring such a broad spectrum of the automotive world.

“DRIVEN” is produced by Real Times Media publishers of the annual “Who’s Who” editions that highlight the movers and shakers in big cities around the country. This is the first time they have taken on documenting the rise and evolution of a specific industry.
